I haven't read any of the above but they look interesting.
I have read and enjoyed Akenfield by Ronald Blythe (although set in Suffolk rather than Norfolk). Written some 30 years ago after a series of interviews with country people made in the '60's by RB. It has become something of a byword for a clever combination of 'fact' (from the interviews) with an added slightly 'fictional' feel. Certainly the reality of country life and work had none of the cosy quality of the 'Miss Read' novels.

You might like to check out the work of Sybil Marshall who grew up in the remote Fen area of East Anglia. I just looked her up and hadn't realised she had been an 'educationalist' of some note. Some entertaining books about her 'primitive' childhood.

Just thought on the trilogy by Norah Lofts set in Medieval Bury St Edmunds (again Suffolk) The Town House, The House at Old Vine and The House at Sunset. I read these many years ago when I spent a summer with friends on the Norfolk/Suffolk border. They had known NL and had all her books. Not great literature but enjoyable reads for history lovers.

really set (I beleive in or around Dunwich - Suffolk worth a visit anyway for the fish and chips on the beach and a visit to the wonderful bookshop at Westleton.
Salt by Jeremy Page `This is a weird and wonderful story, full of atmosphere and odd personalities. Living in Norfolk and knowing the saltmarshes made this book special for me, and the author's ability to catch the Norfolk voice is uncanny. I thought both outstanding, in that the countryside and landscapes came alive.

I just love Norah Lofts and have almost all of her novels. I was thinking just the other day about how long it has been since I read those House books that Vee mentioned.

Thank you all! Hopefully I can find some of these titles in Norwich or London. Our village doesn't have a bookstore and it's too late to go to Uppsala. I must give the garden all my time before I leave.

The only book you list that I've read is Akenfield, years ago, and the book seems to be culled from our bookshelves.

I had a wonderful trip but with no time to read anything but guide books and maps. I found one book by Norah Lofts, "Knight's Acre", at a secondhand book stall at the market in Norwich, found for me by a very helpful man who searched his entire stock. Will read it soon. We stayed at a 5-star B&B outside Norwich, in a house from 1632 with wisteria on the walls. I didn't know there were such luxurious B&B's and much cheaper than the Holiday Inn we had to stay in for the last two nights. The owner had a degree in literature so the house was full of books. My husband and I always had our breakfast at the table next to the window with a windowsill full of books. I used to read a bit by John Donne, one of my favourite poets, waiting for breakfast while my husband read the local newspaper.

We covered most of Norfolk, no time for the rest of East Anglia. We visited gardens and nurseries, cathedrals, the Fens and the Broads. I was happy to hear change ringing outside the church of St. Peter Mancroft. We don't have this kind of bell ringing in Sweden and I have wanted to hear it since I read Dorothy L. Sayers' The Nine Tailors with its lengthy descriptions of the mathematics of change ringing. It was beautiful although not melodious in the conventional way. My husband was as fascinated as I was.
