We have had several discussions about audiobooks-they must have fallen off the edge of the world.
I only use them while working around the house-doing relatively mindless things like painting, cleaning or working in the garden...never doing something to which I am supposed to be paying attention, like driving, because I find that I miss parts of the story while negotiating lane changes, turns, etc. This annoys me. I also don't use them while exercising, because I find I walk or work out to the rhythm of the reader-usually a nice slow pace that doesn't really exercise me! I need music for that.
At the moment, as the yard gets itself up and running, I am listening to several of the Jeeves and Wooster books.

I use audio books a lot, even when I do not have a long commute. Just listened to John Grisham's "The Last Juror".
One of my favorite audio books was "Quo Vadis". I was so engrossed in the story that I drove past by turn...twice!

I listen to them while I work and do mundane things. I'm painting a bathroom this week and was listening to The Masqueraders earlier.
My favorite authors for audio only are Stuart Kaminsky, Martin Cruz Smith, Georgette Heyer, Jan Karon, Maeve Binchy and James Lee Burke.
Some authors I don't like at all on audio, such as Alexander McCall Smith.

I love it when I get a really fat audio- like 20 hours or so - and know it'll be great.

I listen to so many books that I wish I had kept a list of favorites. I generally hate when the authors narrate too.

I''m way behind technologically. I have an ipod but it's so little and I haven't figured it out yet. And I don't care. It's much easier to go the library and check out 20 audio books which I have to do anyway because my Dad listens to books on tape all day long and could never handle an ipod.
I tend to save certain authors for just audio but I do listen to favorites over and over.
I'll get Quo Vadis for my next project!

We've talked about them a number of time. I like them, but don't like them for driving in traffic. They really are quite a distraction, at least as bad as talking on the cell phone.

On long trips and empty highways, I think they enhance safety rather than detract from it. They keep me alert and awake.

You can see I mostly listen in the car, though I did buy a CD player for my sewing room. Sometimes I listen there.

I also couldn't live without them. I listen in the car, doing gardening and housework. The problem is that the books on tape are disappearing and the ipod is too hard. Also those books are not very appealing, at least so far.

Jane Austen and Dickens are the best, recorded by British actors who get the accents so well. Better than reading!

They are better than reading! I tend to skim boring passages but when I'm tuned in I get so much more out of a book.
Some narrators can really bring a book to life in a brand new way. I can't read an Amelia Peabody book anymore without hearing Barbara Rosenblat in my head.
And Jim Dale, Davina Porter, George Guidell...the best.

My Mom and I listened to audio books on our road trips.

I've listened to I Am America, and So Can You! by stephen colbert on audio book, as well as Yellow Discipline by Jim Norton, hearing the authors deliver their books in their own words is awesome, you truly get the essence of every word. Especially in the comedy genre.

I have a Creative ZenV mp3 player. Our library has s subscription to SuffolkWave. I can download books from my computer at home without a fee. It's wonderful. My only suggestion is you buy an MP 3 player with a bookmark feature. They are really easy to use. New York Public Library also has a site to download. Any NY state resident can join.
