What to do about blatant adverts

Hi all

This is for the benefit of some of you who are comparatively new to RP.

There's a thread (no link!) currently posted where someone is just advertising his new book (Unique New Book is Reviewer's Choice 2006!). The right thing to do in this situation was demonstrated on that thread by "twobigdogs" (Pam). If no-one posts anything, it hangs around at the top for a week. So post the one word "Thanks". Then no-one else should touch it. It will rapidly drift downwards as other threads get posted, and will eventually die the death it deserves.

So - to reiterate. One post to get it started. Be polite. And then everybody - leave it alone.

You also used to be able to notify GW and they would remove it. Maybe that still works.

Thanks, Benny and Outdoor, for the ugly truth. One more question: if most of the damage is to two major scaffolds and those are the ones that are wilting already might it help any to prune those branches out? In other words, will the fungus spread from those branches to the rest of the tree or is the fungus fairly limited to the site of attack? If it might help save the tree, I could prune these branches out, but if it won't make any difference to the rest of the tree, I'd like to give those branches a chance to fight it out, too (although if they're already wilting I suppose the battle may already be over.) And I just thought of another question: why haven't I ever noticed problems from these beetles before? Is it possible they weren't around here before this year? The reason I ask is because I'm hoping the reason is that this is just a bad year for them and not the start of new and mounting problems I should expect. And that raises yet another question: which species do people even worry about protecting? I've seen figs and jujubes, and I've heard/read of persimmons, pawpaws, pecans, cherries, peaches, plums, dogwoods (which I assume includes cornelian cherries), Bradford pear (which I assume includes other pears, and in any case is the rootstock for my other pears), sweet potatoes... It's one thing if they ruin all my fruit (most of which seems so likely to succumb to other problems if not these beetles), but sweet potatoes! What are they going to do to my sweet potatoes? What other fruits have any of you had damaged? Are there no cultural practices or helpful management strategies besides pesticides? The jujube and fig both suffered cold injury before they were attacked, so I'm hopeful they might not have been attacked otherwise. The fig had major die-back from the winter, and the jujube had started to push growth in mid-April when we had back-to-back freezes down to 30 degrees (which doesn't seem that unusual but it burned things like a gingko tree that I haven't ever seen burned before -- it's also the first time I've lost my entire Asian pear crop.) I've seen jujubes advertized as late vegetating and therefore immune to cold events like this, and they've seemed later in the past, but the only fruits that I've never seen seriously affected by late spring freezes are (rabbiteye) blueberries and figs. The figs have surprised me, given their more marginal winter hardiness, but they've weathered late spring cold that has affected all sorts of much winter hardier crops.

It's a difficult situation certainly, but NOT impossible. On the discipline and household chores issue, the book 'How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk' is a fabulous resource! It's an easy read, and filled with very practical, hands-on solutions that really work. They really do work. For school issues -- Has this SS been tested for learning disabilities? If DH asks (in writing), the school is required (by federal law) to provide something called a 'Comprehensive Individual Assessment' to test for the presence of disabilities -- learning disabilities or other disabilities that manifest as behavioral problems. Any kid who is THAT reluctant to do his schoolwork is likely to have underlying difficulties. Is the work too hard for him? Or perhaps he's actually very bright but BORED out of his skull. Or he may have ADHD or another similar condition that just makes it harder. The thing is -- With a diagnosis, you have more leaverage with the schools to get them to work with you to provide the supports he needs to succeed. This could include having the teacher write down all assignments in his notebook. (It did for my son -- Now he writes them down and they check.) It could involve having the teacher's maintain a website with their assignments posted -- That's standard at our schools anyway. It might mean shorter assignments so the homework isn't overwhelming, or adopting a policy of 15 minutes per class per night, or 90 minutes total, maximum. They might accept answers dictated by him but written by you, or assignments shortened as you see fit. ALL of these options are available to kids diagnosed with special needs. And they MAY be available to you even without a diagnosis if you ask. The school DOES sound willing -- As for 'tattling' to BioMom, you may want to take a pre-emptive stance and email her that things have gotten out of control and that you will be taking a firmer stance. That you will be requiring the kids: to clean up their own posessions (or have stuff tossed or put into time-out), to fix their own breakfasts and school lunches (but that you will have easy-to-fix foods available), and to do their own laundry and clean their rooms. That you absolutely will not beat them and will yell as little as possible, and that given SD's prior crazy tales against her, she should expect to hear some crazy stories against you as well. Maybe also send a copy to the counselors at each kid's school. You can do this Momof5 -- But NOT if you throw your hands up. I'd start with the book and general household discipline, then step up on SS once things have improved a bit at home. If Dad won't support you 100%, I'd threaten to take that vacation. And if that doesn't work -- DO IT. If he's not part of the solution, he's part of the problem.

Kirkhall-- you say you won't believe pics, and I agree-- no one's going to show pics of their failures. The thing is, the same can be said of referrals. You want a good indictor? Ask him if he'll give you a referral of someone where he had difficulties, not expecting him to do it, but to see what his reaction is. If he tells you he's never had a problem. be afraid. Be VERY afraid. I was even just talking about this with a bunch of other contractors on Facebook-- any contractor in ANY trade who says he's never had a problem or failure on a jobsite, has either not been in the trade very long, or is a blatant liar. Either way, not someone you want to hire. the difference between a quality contractor and a fly by night is how they handle it. If they try and put it off on everyone else, and refuse to fix the problem, that's a fly by night. If, however, they do their best to find the root cause, and fix the problem, that's you're quality contractor. As for me-- mine was actually very public several years ago, and even in both this forum and John Bridge's site. We even had TCNA board members in on it trying to figure out what happened. One way or the other, I ended up redoing the problem on my own dime, and changing up on a couple of things-- one thing that I'd done, and one that the homeowner had done, and the problem didn't present itself again. So back to the topic at hand. How do we notify GW of this commercial enterprise? The same thing has just happened on the Garden Writers forum. I hope this is not a trend.

People promoting oddball books have always popped up here from time to time. As Martin said, it's easiest to just post a "thanks" and watch it drop. Unless it becomes incessant (anyone remember the Betty MacDonald lady?) there's probably little point in trying to get the Powers That Be to remove it.

Someone on another forum sent a couple of emails to IVillage about some blatant advertising going on by a poster and no one responded. He was curious to know if personal advertising was allowed now and started a thread about it. His thread was pulled. Maybe IVillage is now permitting some and not all and it's on a case by case type thing. They ( IVillage) really seem to be keeping an eye on all the forums because friendly warnings are being sent all the time. So yes...I agree completely with Martin. Just don't respond and let the post drop off the page.

Sorry. I didn't know the "thanks" gambit. After I posted my comment about it being spam, I wrote to iVillage. There's a catagory they list about bad strings and I told them about this one. But apparently they haven't done anything yet.
In the future, I'll just follow martin and pam's lead.

Sheri - Oh, yes, I remember the Betty MacDonald poster - the most bizarre thread in this forums's history. She had that thread going for years. I got threatening emails from her and had to change addies. (That was when there was no one monitoring this site.)

There was a thread in the GW Home Dec forum that some of the posters asked to be moved to a different part of the forum; it was moved, but it took several days. And as far as the Hot Topics board goes, I tried it out for a week. There are many respectful posters, but as mwoods said, there are also a lot of slams on both sides. I usually feel like I need a stiff drink and a shower after I've been there. *shiver*

Not to bring up bad memories for you old timers, but what happened with this Betty MacDonald poster? My interest is piqued. If it was between September 2003 and October 2004, I might be able to find it through the WayBack Machine website and avoid all this house cleaning I'm supposed to be doing this afternoon.

Didn't it get caught in the 100 posting limit we had then and finally fall off the end? I was always so tempted to mess with the thread so that it couldn't easily be posted to, but I was afraid of getting banned again, so I desisted. And would you guys stop using that Name in the thread! We don't want her to google us back and restart.

Certainly someone could do it if they referred to the author as "She who must not be named...?" (Perhaps SWMNBN for short. ")

If remember correctly, it wasn't all that exciting.

Re the 'SWMNBN' thread. This was 'ongoing' when I first 'found' RP, perhaps 4/5 years ago.
I think it was pre-100 posts, because I remember the slider-bar at the right of the screen (sorry don't know the proper name) got shorter and shorter.
I think a couple of European folk were keen on B MaCD and wrote to 'us' and each other using a variety of names.
They have a 'fan-club' running which involves members paying many Â£$Â£$'s for new 'stories/info' about that author and then send them via the computer, plus lots of copies of letters they have received and reprinted possibly without permission. I came across them quite by chance at another reading site not long ago, where I was glad to see they had been rumbled!
It was through that very long thread and my mistake in posting something on it that I was both inundated with emails and sent to Disney.

Basically it was one woman who was an enthusiast who kept posting questions and then answering them under other names. But everyone could see from the source code what she was doing. When confronted, she insisted she was posting for others unable to do so. That is what finally drove her off, now that I think about it. When we had to register we couldn't post anonymously. What was annoying was that as soon as the thread fell from the first page she would post another question to put it back. Basically her own front page thread which interested no one else at all.
