I've read the Piers Anthony book - if I remember correctly it was part of a trilogy. I do remember that I enjoyed it very much. He tackled some big questions of life in an interesting way.

I am willing to stand corrected, but in the Sandman comics, Death is a character, but not the narrator. Not throughout the series anyway.

Death is the protagonist in Gaiman's Death, the High Cost of Living and in Death, The Time of Your Life. He took his character Death from the Sandman series and gave her two titles of her own.

I'm remember being very fond of Anthony's On a Pale Horse

I'm remembering an early short novel or novella by Peter S. Beagle called Come, Lady Death. Death may not have been the narrator -- I don't really remember -- but Death was the main character. I liked it a lot.

Whoever composed the list referred to in Sara and CC's posts either hadn't read all the books themselves, or doesn't know the difference between a narrator and a protagonist.

I haven't checked other posts to see if The Book Thief has already been discussed, but I'm intrigued by the idea of death as the narrator. Is this a book you would recommend? -- Kathy

Kathy, I'm not sure how to answer that. I am about halfway through it, and the only thing that keeps me reading is that I want to know what happens to the characters. I find the narrative style annoyingly affected, even pretentious in places, and as yet I see no good reason for using Death as a narrator other than for the sake of novelty.

It's a while since I read it, but I loved The Book Thief. The device of using Death as a narrator I found quite acceptable - a bit like the Lovely Bones, it gives the writer an opportunity to have a first-person omniscient narrator. (The difference is that I thought TLB was a truly dreadful book.)
