I Thought I was a Gardener

...until I made my first visit to the UK this summer. Spent time in Glasgow Botanical Gardens, Kew Gardens, Iona, Glastonbury, Collett Park in Shepton-Mallet...

never wanted to come home. You do it brilliantly - applause, applause!

Botanical gardens tend to make me feel like I'm not a gardener too! Mind you I've only been gardening for under 10 years. It's fun though, seeing what can be done on a large scale and then maybe incorporating an idea or two. You covered quite a distance on one trip, didn't you?

The climate helps us a lot. Reading the US forums shows what many of you have to contend with.

Roses in our heat tend to go "sorta" dormant. I always get roses with big fat rose hips on them in the summer. I don't dead head in the summer. I just let them do as they wish. Set hips and "sorta" go dormant. About the first or second week in october, I give them a very light pruning. I remove candelabra (most are a result of our summer heat) Very twiggy growth, wimpy blooms. Shortly after that they start putting on nice growth and good blooms again, and you have roses all the way to Christmas. It is generally some time between Christmas and mid January that I prune back my roses hard for the new year. Easy

Good grief, Codywalker! Talk about ironic! I just posted a question about remote thermometers. Can you tell me what make you own, where you bought it and if you like it? Heck, we must be neighbors here in Pennsylvania! I'm in north central PA, between Bloomsburg and Williamsport. I'm itching to get planting! gary

Lovely vignette, Denise. Thank you for sharing In a remarkable piece of synchronicity (to me), I was sitting on the swing yesterday evening. I had read your post earlier. I was gazing out to Reve D'Or which has her first two sprays ever. She is growing under your style trellis which I constructed last weekend. I have decided that the bent and arched rebar are too short there and will probably change to the 10 foot un-bent version. While contemplating this I noticed a hummingbird had flown in to feast on Reve D Or's blossoms. In a split second it alighted on the rebar and just hung there. I was quite far away, but did notice a prominent band around the throat. As it was nearing dusk, I could not see color either. Veronica

Kathy, I know you have the best of intentions but I think you're biting off more than one person can chew since your ideas are weather-dependent and advertising intensive (cost-wise). What it also won't help is getting the interested people to the shelter to adopt some of these rescued animals. What you could do is make people aware this fellow needs donations of pet food and cat litter. Just remember, animal control officers frequently have to respond to noise and odor complaints and find a burden of under-fed/watered semi-feral small animals that bred and expanded way beyond the original intent of the shelter provider. You have a good heart but I suspect this fellow needs simple donations of pet food and perhaps donations of veterinary services.

Many, but not all. Here in the NW corner of the U.S., the climate is similiar to a lot of the UK. That's why I pop in here on this Forum from time to time.
A picture of some conifers in Westonbirt Arboretum, Glouceshire I saw in a tree book inspired my garden's design. That and a trip to North Devon near Bideford where I toured a garden called Marwood. Absolutely lovely!
Oh, and two days at Kew Gardens while staying in Soho.
I hope to return someday.

That's only fair since we stole most of those conifers from the western half of America :)
