If you are looking for single flowers - for red how about R. Moyesii 'Geranium'. Brilliant red flowers with huge hips in the autumn. For single white flowers you could consider Alba Semi-Plena - wonderful scent, scarlet hips in autumn. Very early flowering Canary Bird for single yellow flowers, also has hips in autumn. All these are once flowering. If you wanted to look at double yellow flowers - Agnes (Rugosa) has a good scent, some repeat flowering, not sure about hips. Mme Alfred Carriere is a wonderful rose - white, semi-double flowers, great scent, good repeat - I grow mine as a huge shrub, but you may not like the slight pink tinge it occasionally has. You could also consider the hybrid musks - Francesca has beautiful apricot yellow, semi-double flowers, Moonlight is a good white with single/semi-double flowers, good scent. Nur Mahal, bright crimson, semi-double flowers. Whatever you choose, I expect you will need to protect it from the rabbits with wire until it gets going - rabbits love rose foliage!

Thanks for the suggestions pjc -- I've just had another look at the site and I think I might be able to squeeze 3 or 4 roses in. I wonder how large Alfred Carriere is if you grow it as a shrub ? It's quite a windy site although existing shrubs provide a little shelter. I think I will definitely go for rosa moyesii, plus probably one hybrid musk and one rugosa. I did have an ordinary dog rose in aqnother part of the garden but it outgrew its site and I fell in the pond trying to prune it, so it had to go !

My Mme Alfred Carriere is around 8 ft x 6 ft (third year). Originally planted to climb into an old tree, which came down in a gale, but seems happy being semi-supported by the fatsia in front and mingles in with it. Doesn't mind being pruned back when necessary, but will always be a very vigorous rose, throwing out long canes, so may not be the most suitable for your particular requirement.
