Help from any Dickens experts required, please!

I've just finished Martin Chuzzlewit again, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Minor spoiler following, but this being Dickens, it's not much of one.

I remembered that Tom Pinch had discovered that his hero Pecksmith had feet of clay, and was altogether a nasty hypocrite. But I also remembered a speech in which someone denounced someone else, and in this speech he almost spits out the persons name in deep disgust over and over. I'd thought it was Tom Pinch denouncing Pecksmith - but it wasn't there. (And in any case, as my wife pointed out - Tom Pinch is too nice to denounce anyone like that.)

It was written something like "and this vile man - Smith! - has been..." etc etc.

So what book am I thinking of? Anyone any idea?
