I too have not had luck with Hollyhocks. I had a great first year from seeds (so great I have tried stubbornly to duplicate it) but then all ensuing years have produced nothing but stunted plants with yellow leaves and buds that are kind of moldy looking that also sometimes have some kind of mite like creature and hardly bloom - I have assumed that it was some kind of fungal condition so this year I transplanted last year's seedlings out in the alley where they would get more air and not be as contained as they are in my small fenced yard. Same thing. Should I start again with new seeds - is it genetic or just this environment? (humid summers and 6 hours of afternoon sun?)

I know this one! Rectified tile is tile that is baked as one sheet and then cut while non rectified tile is cut and then baked hence the potential for tiles that are not exactly the same size with the same exact edges due to shrinkage. The advantage is rectified tile is more even since the shrinkage from baking occurred prior to cutting the tile. Epoxy grout won't stain and needs no maintance EVER!

Thanks...yeah...I can't imagine it's a case of air around the roots. I mean, this is how I repot all my plants and...I think between my constantly adding additional potting medium during the repotting process...then watering...letting the water soak through...which in turn makes the soil compact down more....then adding more potting medium...watering yet again...letting the soil compact more still....pressing down on all the soil to get out air pockets...adding still more potting medium...watering...and so on...I think it's fair to say that the root ball gets filled in with the soil/ammendments. And I don't think it's the water...same water I always use. ;-) Anyway, I've since cut back all the stems where it was clear that the leaves were beyond any possible 'perking up' and...while the plant now looks a bit sorry (bare), the leaves that remain DO seem to have perked up a bit. And I see minute signs of new leaf growth on the otherwise barren other stems. So there may still be hope. ;-)
