Plant some of both, the smaller to medium ones to size up for cooking and enugh of the larger to divide into next years planting stock. Cook mainly the larger ones. Except always plant back the very largest, hopefully to select for increasing sizes, and make sure to mark those when you plant so you know the resulting daughter lines next year. Some strains produce larger bulbs than others so there is some room for selection to improve bulb size. Small size bulbs are a common complaint about both shallots and potato onions. This is a different growth pattern than with garlic, where you always plant the largest cloves to produce the largest possible bulbs.

I think that would work quite well. Here, they dry down in June, just before the worst heat. Also, I wonder if they might not somehow adapt Every time I dig them, I manage to miss one or two, which then survive and sprout in the fall. These survivors always seem more vigorous than the ones I have pampered. Anyway, I'm still working with potato onions. They are WONDERFUL. When we lived in Indiana, they were our main onion. My wife's grandparents raised them for decades, in Southern Illinois, and they were the only onion they grew. Here is the link to where I purchased my start. @Adelaide (Z8b Canada) ..Adelaide... DA shrub roses of 4.5 feet or above, generally have a dual personality... some might use more colourful terms to describe it... in that they can be grown as a shrub, or as a climber.. that choice is with the gardener.. although the rose will often tell you in no uncertain terms, which way they intend to go, like it or lump it... I've grown a number of them as short climbers very easily indeed.. DA's heights are just a guide, transcribed direct from the UK inventory and can often seem ridiculous when you've had the rose a few years.... the only ones I know that perform true for us, are those marked 3.5 feet or lower.. and there aren't many of those.. Unlike the ever popular Gertrude Jekyll... Royal Jubilee has fewer thorns, better foliage and repeats much better.. I am in the driest [if that's the right term] part of England but we get rain, and humidity is nearly always high.. I get my share of black spot such as it is here.. you may have more strains to deal with where you are though... so it's perhaps not wise to take my experience and relate it to yours but it's all trial and error isn't it?... I really want that rose again, I had to remove it due to building work on my property.. I want to grow it again one day, as big as it could get... let the thing rip, you know?... best of luck...

Cindy thanks for that link. I forget about companies that have so much information on their sites. Zeedman, I bought them in the spring, I will definitely look them over. I have a small property with a vegetable garden that doesn't get more than 6hrs of sun and there are trees in neighboring yards that really reduce that 6 hrs to less in the fall when the angle of the sun changes. But - now that I think of it, I could experiment and do half of them now and half of them in the Fall. Then I would know what options I hae going forward. Thanks!
