An Unusual Author and Person

A while ago when discussing travel books I mixed up my Paraguay's with my Patagonia's; maybe because I am English I don't have much 'feeling' for South American countries.

But for those of you who do I would recommend The Hacienda by Lisa St Aubin de Teran.

It took me an age to find the title at Amazon as I couldn't get her name spelt correctly so had to hunt around on Google.

She is one of the strangest characters I have 'met' on the page.

Married at 16 (almost unheard of in the UK) she lands up in Venezuela on her mad husband's plantation, where he deserts her. This book is the story of how she coped and escaped.

She has also written of her life in Venice and Umbria with different husbands and various children, and is great on European railway journeys.

Has anyone else read and enjoyed (or hated) books by unusual people?
