I'm not so sure. Would be glad to know more, or see pics of anything similar. But I also know nothing about the nuances of cell-photos. I've known many species of hickories, but I have never seen *anything* like the size and color of those "bud scales" on any hickory. Looks more like young leafy branches sprouting from a cluster of mutant anthuriums.... Is this an artifact of the cellphone photo process, or is this particular hickory actually blessed with huge brightly colored... budscales? These young trees seem to be growing straight and tall, and although it's not impossible for opportunistic branches to develop on trunks when they're at this young stage, this seems to be the only such trunk sprout in the grove. I would love to have better info on how the picture *looks* like this. Probably just my ignorance, and I would always rather fix that ignorance :~

It reminds me of one that was given to me at one of the Texas Rose Rustlers lottos one year. Among our circle it is just called "Single Pink China". I don't recall who brought it to our meetings first. If it's a china, it will do wonderfully in your climate, though. Allison

Hi again, The Perennial Plant Swap that we held in the City Park in Wayland Michigan in August was a great success. The photos have been posted for you to see. Check out the size of the plants (we said plants were to be in gallon pots, of good size and be well-rooted) and the happy faces! The local newspaper even stopped by to check us out (Old fashioned hospitality!) and we even have a photo of that with the other photos. They featured us on the back page of their newspaper - full color and large picture! You have Serviceberry or Shadblow AKA Amelanchier sp. The fruit is infected with Cedar/Apple rust, otherwise it is a beautiful tree. Sam
