Anyone else had figs, olives etc this year ?

I was sooo pleased, that I even photographed it before I ate it.. I had one ripe fig from my little fig tree this summer (year 2 after purchase).

Has any one (in South and South East especially) had figs, olives or anything else exotic and edible in their garden this Summer ??

I get some figs every year here in Oxford. Not really a problem even in an average summer.

I've got two fig treelets; one bought two or three years ago from the bargain bin, exact type unknown, which is in a big pot and stays outdoors over winter. It's quite big, lots of leaves, and has one biggish green fig on it which I'm waiting for - that'll be the first.

The other came as a present from a friend last year, Brown Turkey, is in a small pot and overwintered in the greenhouse. About 40/50cm tall now, not so many leaves, but we have had 5 figs off it already. Small, but delicious!

The olives on my little spindly tree in a pot don't seem to get bigger than tiny beads before they disappear...

Thanks to you all for your replies. We were watering again last night and my husband said we should just pull them up and start over, instead of watering and getting nothing (another concern because we are on a well and haven't had enough rain to mention since early June, if then). I just keep thinking the tomatoes will surely start to produce. I raise a couple of heirlooms including Green Zebra, which will normally produce over 100 tomatoes per plant (my experince with them) and I've had three!!!!!! Oh and squash bugs. We got invaded last year and I'm at my wits end with them. I have tried to be an organic gardener but if ever something makes me reach for the poison it will be the squash bugs. I've pulled thousands of eggs, 100 of mature bugs and nyphms but everyday there are more. At least this year I know to keep working at it every day, last year they killed my plants. But this year I don't have squash ripening so don't know why I am so worried, guess I want to beat the little beasts! My mom in in South Arkansas and she has yet to have a single okra. Said it is shoulder high but just now getting flowers. Dad said she has the prettiest garden he's ever seen, not a lot out of it, but way more than I've had. I hope this isn't our new normal. COLD winters and HOT summers..... may have to look at a climate controlled garden!

Thank you all! Thank you Wodka for the encouragement and thank you maire-cate for the link! I am 6b, although as someone else mentioned, for the last 10-15 years our temps have increased and our winters are milder. When this was discussed on the cottage garden forum, using the plant as a container plant was suggested. I do the same thing with pink jasmine each year, although I do not bring the jasmine in for the winter, just get a new plant. This weekend I ordered one plus some wisteria - from ebay! I have used this nursery before and they are located in the carolinas. I have ordered wisteria from them before. Funny thing, wisteria grows everywhere here - but you do not see it in our nurseries. tina

We had our dinner today. Bought most of what I needed last night, but sure enough--discovered that we were down to our last 1/2" of honey mustard salad dressing--and it's the only dressing DD eats. So sent DH to the store early this morning to pick up another bottle. Know what you mean about competition. As you know, I'm just on the other side of the river. Within about 5 miles of my house, I've got 3 Acmes (Albertson's), a Superfresh, Thriftway, ShopRight, Genuardi's (Safeway) and everyone's favorite--Wegman's. Those are just the 'big' stores. Can't begin to count the little deli's, 7-11's, WaWa's, meat shops, pasta shops, bakeries, etc. Nice to have choices, though! It's so weird in the country, only stores we have there are a couple of ShopRites and one Acme. Oh, and a WM supercenter.

Another off-topic vaccine question. What about HPV vaccinations? Anyone who has had more than one partner, or has a partner who ever had another partner, could be at risk. My doctor told me that even long-term married people can pass the infection back and forth, if one or both was ever exposed in their younger years. The virus never goes away once infected. The immune system usually makes it dormant but it can flare up decades later and infect a partner, even if you've been monogamous for a long time. And if someone becomes divorced or widowed, and remarries, they are open to new exposure regardless of age. Hopefully everyone is doing their part to eradicate HPV as well, men included. Even if you've already been exposed, there are many different strains and the vaccine protects against multiple strains.

looked after a fig for 16 years at work and this year its got loads of figs on it and i picked and ate one yesterday!
It would ahve produced figs other years but its in a daft sopt in a polytunnel and uptil now hasnt had the room as its been cut back regularly for access, it tends to get very rampant
