Frieda,

I just saw this book reviewed on a blog I found called "things mean a lot." She compared it I Capture the Castle. I don't know if that's true or if you know about this already, but I thought I'd mention it.

What a wonderful blog! I spent some time noodling around. I really liked the voice of the reviewer.

I might even look for the book.

The striping thing above is totally normal; it's the beginning of woodiness/bark formation on older canes. Next year there will be even more brownish stripes and eventually there'll be no more green, just good strong wood more able to repel canker and withstand swings in winter temperatures. Sommerville SC's first two photos are of happily growing plants that may be about to abandon the older thinner canes. Sometimes the junctions of growths get gnarly. It's not a bad gnarly (which would be stem gall), but it's where the new stems may have had to restart themselves a time or two. (You'd have reason to worry, if the canes and stems beyond the less beautiful areas where distinctively yellow green or if there were the reddish purple half halo below them.) And Reilly, thou mayest follow the advice of the demented rose grower Lady MacBeth who proclaimed "out, out damned spot." (Although she at least had ready access to blood meal of a sort.)

After buyong daylilies this spring, I swore I wouldn't get any more LOL. I just ordered 10 more from a local nursery that is having a 50% off sale. Most of these were now $4-8, I just couldn't pass that up. Well, this is getting hot! Oakley - if this is the best way for you to enjoy and learn about fine art, then do it! I am all for learning to love art as an avocation, in whatever way suits the person best. In our house there are some very nice oil and watercolor originals on the walls, as well as prints, posters, lithos, and gasp, some framed postcards and a calendar picture. In our bedroom I just hung a 2010 calendar with twelve of Vermeer's loveliest paintings. I may frame a couple of those after our MBR redo. I agree that visiting a museum is the best way to look at great pictures. However, with my horrible back pain, I couldn't make it through more than one or two rooms without a Tylenol-3 or two, which would turn me into a slug-brain. And the nearest decent gallery/museum is almost 400 miles away, in L.A. Here's an additional suggestion, Oakley. There is the most wonderful BBC series, called "The Private Life of a Masterpiece", available on Netflix. It's about $75 on Amazon. It's by far the best thing I've ever seen on film on this subject. Each DVD studies three or four great works of art, describes its location, history, style, the artist's life, and has a tremendous musical score as well. When I watched the first one, I called DH in to have a look; he said "No, don't think so", but eventually he wandered in, sat down, and loved it. We plan to buy the series. DH is a History Channel - WW2 kind of guy. When I first met him and we were having coffee, he declared "I hate art". Having already spotted him as DH material, I smiled and thought to myself "When I get through with you, you will love it." And he does. He thinks he's all sophisticated now because he discovered Gustav Klimt, and so now we have a Klimt nude mousepad. LOL. Whatever it takes, is my motto. Do consider the BBC series.

I've also found a title THE DREAM OF SCIPIO which is supposed to be an excellent historical fiction.

yoyo The Dream of Scipio by Iain Pears (title taken from a work by Cicero . . and no, I didn't know that either)
is by no means an 'easy' read. I just checked a review where it is described as rigorous. I started it some while ago and then other books/things got in the way and I never finished it. It is three 'stories' set in Southern France but divided by many centuries. Perhaps the sort of book that might have been a 'Booker' candidate . . . but not too precious. So NOT like the type of book in the title of this thread. ;-)

SC, thanks for remembering that I love I Capture the Castle. I'm certainly interested in a story that might be similar. I'll get a copy of The Lost Art of Keeping Secrets ASAP to find out.

I also noticed the blogger's mention of The Brontes Went to Woolworths (Rachel Ferguson) and Westwood (Stella Gibbons). I'd love to revisit those! One book leads to another...

In a moment of book buying impulsiveness I not only ordered a copy of The Lost Art of Keeping Secrets, but also The Brontes Went to Woolworths (and I still feel ever-so-slightly virtuous because I did check the library first *vbg*). I think both will be to my liking.

I read The Lost Art of Keeping Secrets a couple of years ago and and enjoyed it. I can't remember how I came across the book, but the author Eva Rice is the daughter of Tim Rice who was a partner in early days of Andrew Lloyd Webber and wrote his lyrics. She has written several books but this was the only one our library had at that time.

I have tried to get into THE BRONTES WENT TO WOOLWORTHS and found it to be difficult to like.

Did anyone read this ??

When it was published, The Lost Art of Keeping Secrets was featured in Barnes & Noble's Discover Great New Writers (a booklet they used to publish quarterly, I don't know if they still have it). I wrote down the title on my list, and eventually found it at Half Price Books for $1. Since then it's been in my tottering TBR pile. After reading the review in "Things Mean a Lot" blog, it's moved up on the pile.

I loved the blog. The only problem of checking it periodically is that the list and the pile will never end...
