Frieda,

I just saw this book reviewed on a blog I found called "things mean a lot." She compared it I Capture the Castle. I don't know if that's true or if you know about this already, but I thought I'd mention it.

What a wonderful blog! I spent some time noodling around. I really liked the voice of the reviewer.

I might even look for the book.

It can either be something that you have made or things that we use here on the forum to make our art. You will also need to agree to have your gift mailed by December first. To everyone following this exchange... we finally heard from Sheila, I was relieved to hear that nothing had happened to her or her health. I received 4 hostas,but all except one small one,were in a horrible dried out condition, I dont know what could of went wrong, since she had a tracking number on them...and they had only been in transport for 2-3 days. THere was no moisture at all on anything. The garden art she sent was nice. I just dont seem to have the normal excitment, I always felt about this exchange because I feel like we forced her to go thru with it. Alot of this could of been avoided if she would kept in contact with us, but instead the email I received just said the boxes would be sent out July 5th. We honestly would of understood Sheila, but you left us no option but to think the worst. Frank, I feel so guilty now that you have sent us the beautiful plants you did.I dont want you to think we were trying to take advantage of you, by accepting your wonderful offer to us. That said..if you would like us to reimberse you for your plants or return your generous offer please let us know. I know I can speak for Margie as well as myself on this. We honestly didnt expect to hear anything from Sheila. If there is one thing I would like everyone to remember if and when you do a "bad" trade...something good will come out of it..its called friendship,that would come in the form of anyone who comes to your defense in your situation. I am proud to say, I have made 2 wonderful new friends ..Margie and Frank. The hosta community is truly a very special community of some wonderful people, so dont let one bad experience spoil it for you. (((hugs))) to all and have a great day!

LOL, my parents didn't have twin beds, but I remember my grandparents having them! I didn't need the rhythm method - we knew we wanted at least four kids, and after the length of time it took for me to get pregnant and sustain a pregnancy the first time, we never used anything again. My closest spaced kids are 20 months apart, then the rest are almost exactly 2 years. Everyone thinks we planned it that way, but truthfully, we didn't use any preventative measures nor was I tracking my cycles. It just sort of happened that way. However, after my fourth, I knew *I* was done - dh was hoping for at least one more but four kids in less than 6 years was enough for me. The woman with 12 kids...when I was pregnant with #4, she was pregnant with #6. Her oldest was only a year older than mine, so she was having her 6th in 7 years. I couldn't wrap my mind around that as I was nearing the end of my pregnancy and beginning to wonder if I was nuts having four kids so close in age. So when she continued on to have six more kids after I was done, yikes! And honestly, she might have had a 13th - I've seriously lost track at this point. And if you could see her - you'd be amazed. She is gorgeous and always manages to look beautiful even after all those kids.

I've also found a title THE DREAM OF SCIPIO which is supposed to be an excellent historical fiction.

yoyo The Dream of Scipio by Iain Pears (title taken from a work by Cicero . . and no, I didn't know that either)
is by no means an 'easy' read. I just checked a review where it is described as rigorous. I started it some while ago and then other books/things got in the way and I never finished it. It is three 'stories' set in Southern France but divided by many centuries. Perhaps the sort of book that might have been a 'Booker' candidate . . . but not too precious. So NOT like the type of book in the title of this thread. ;-)

SC, thanks for remembering that I love I Capture the Castle. I'm certainly interested in a story that might be similar. I'll get a copy of The Lost Art of Keeping Secrets ASAP to find out.

I also noticed the blogger's mention of The Brontes Went to Woolworths (Rachel Ferguson) and Westwood (Stella Gibbons). I'd love to revisit those! One book leads to another...

In a moment of book buying impulsiveness I not only ordered a copy of The Lost Art of Keeping Secrets, but also The Brontes Went to Woolworths (and I still feel ever-so-slightly virtuous because I did check the library first *vbg*). I think both will be to my liking.

I read The Lost Art of Keeping Secrets a couple of years ago and and enjoyed it. I can't remember how I came across the book, but the author Eva Rice is the daughter of Tim Rice who was a partner in early days of Andrew Lloyd Webber and wrote his lyrics. She has written several books but this was the only one our library had at that time.

I have tried to get into THE BRONTES WENT TO WOOLWORTHS and found it to be difficult to like.

Did anyone read this ??

When it was published, The Lost Art of Keeping Secrets was featured in Barnes & Noble's Discover Great New Writers (a booklet they used to publish quarterly, I don't know if they still have it). I wrote down the title on my list, and eventually found it at Half Price Books for $1. Since then it's been in my tottering TBR pile. After reading the review in "Things Mean a Lot" blog, it's moved up on the pile.

I loved the blog. The only problem of checking it periodically is that the list and the pile will never end...
