I would suggest ajuga as well. A couple of years ago, ajuga appeared in one area of our lawn which is shaded much of the day. It is visible early in the spring before we start mowing. Once we start mowing, we really don't see it unless you start to inspect the lawn up close and personal. It comes back every year so mowing and light foot traffic does not seem to effect it much. That looks like "roadside aster", a weed that thrives in soil that is low in fertility. You can discourage it with proper fertilization, and you kill it with broadleaf-weed herbicides.

Glyphosate will kill most weeds, I find it a bit weak on sedges, but almost all grasses, and most broadleaves will be affected. If it is not working, either the rain is washing it off, or you are not applying it properly. Which tradename are you purchasing? Maybe it is one of the aquatic versions that does not come mixed with a surfactant? Round up has a surfactant already, but the aquatic versions do not, since the surfactant used in Roundup is not allowed in the water. These versions of glyphosate need to have a surfactant added to have good results. Surfactants help with surface coverage, and penetration into the leaf, and some of the newer ones even help with rain fastness. Simple surfactants use alcohols or soaps or both, that is why some other posters recommended adding detergent to help. However, since you seem frustrated my suggestion would be to go to where you bought the glyphosate and ask for a recommendation for a surfactant. If you find that you do have a glyphosate that already contains a surfactant then you must be applying it improperly. Read the label carefully and try again. Glyphosate is the right choice if you learn to use it right. There is another choice, chemical name Imazapyr, tradenames arsenal, habitat, polaris that is a bit more effective, but it is much more expensive, and has more potential for non target damage. I would not suggest it for use in your yard. Bill

Deanna, one time we did a faux finish on a small room that required a lot of taping off. It didn't turn out like I expected. Right color but bad faux technique. Patient and practical husband agreed to start over. We loved the second result but alone I would have been very discouraged. He did all the taping. I'm a decorative artist so have taken some color theory classes. It's still hard to apply to practice. Right now I love the combination of a dark raspberry daylily next to a dark pink yarrow (apple spice, I think) plus some echinacae all blooming at the same time. But the neighboring shastas are too tall and on the other side of the circular bed is a dead zone. On the north side I am supposed to have a small hosta with very yellow foliage but it has been snacked on by deer. The nicely contrasting pale yellow day lilies want to look south instead of pointing north. Our view of the bed is from the north side. The deer see the prettiest side. I have planted some annuals. The tall phlox seem at least a foot shorter this year. I think it gets hard to figure in height and bloom times as well as color. A narrow border along the walkway to a porch is just a mess. A tall yellow daylily and southernwood are at one end. Lady's mantle, hosta and astilbe fighting for space with each other, at the other end, and a jumble in the middle. I have considered planting the whole bed to zinnias and still might. I think Danielle and her sister have a real gift. Danielle does a lot with hosta and conifers. Her sister just does everything amazingly well and is more flamboyant with colorDeanne's garden. I know one of my first mistakes years ago was refusing to recognize how little sun my garden got.
