Book named Glass castle is interesting read

I looked through and did not see mention on the book Glass Castle. I could not put it down! I talked about it so much hubby read it.It's about a disfunctional family --True Story- written by one of todays columnist on her life.

I think it is sad but not depressing and that you will like reading it.

Currently reading the true story of The Boy Who Fell From the Sky. Plane crash over Lockerbie is the background. Different and Ok so far but hard to get into it.

I just finished The Glass Castle last week and our book group will be discussing it tomorrow night.

I was not disappointed with anything in this book. Often I enjoy a story until it gets to the end where the author feels they have to quickly and neatly tidy everything up. This book had a believable ending.

My book club also read this book last year. Jodi, I will be interested to hear how your discussion progresses. My club thought much of the book was "enhanced" a la A Million Little Pieces.

So many books I have loved and lost myself into. I still love the classics like Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice, Great Expections, Wuthering Heights, Little Women and can reread them over and over again. Jane Eyre is probably my favourite of those books and I read my Mom's hardcover from her childhood once a year. A Tree Grow in Brooklyn is another favourite. Terry Brook's Sword of Shannara Books and other series of his as well. Same for David Eddings. I like Fantasy books about wizards, dwarves, etc. I read the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings Trilogy when I was young and loved those books so much that I couldn't bring myself to watch the Lord of the Rings movies. I didn't want the movie to take away what my imagination saw in those books. My brother bought me the boxed set when we were kids and even to this day no gift he has ever given me (well the Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer comes pretty darn close) will mean as much to me. I wouldn't lend them to anyone else to read. Another book I read when I was a teenager was called Tregaryn's Daughter. I can't even remember now what it was about but I remember really enjoying it and when reading it this picture of where they lived really stuck in my mind. My friend's Mom had a picture hanging in her living room and that picture is almost identical to what I imagined in my mind. I have never looked on line but I have never been able to find that book again to reread and I really want to. Maybe it won't be as good as I remember. Another favourite book of mine was The Outsiders. I must have read that book over 100 times. I knew exactly where it was in the library. Years later that book was on my niece's schools requirerd reading list. I told her I had read that book many times and could recite every word of it to her. I wouldn't watch the movie made from that book either because it couldn't be as good as the book was. Another book was called the Pig Man that I read and reread many times. Years later it went by another name but I read it when it was called the Pig Man. I can't remember who the author was. I don't read as much as I would like because of the lighting in my house. I need to get a better lamp to read by. I miss reading and getting lost in a good book. Anne

Chris Bohjalian, who's been mentioned already, also had a book out of compilations from a column he wrote when he moved to Vermont. It's called "Idyll Banter," and I really enjoyed it. Right now, I'm reading "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society," which is a few years old. I'm enjoying it. "The Distant Hours" -- (fiction) about a letter posted in 1941 that reaches its destination in 1992 -- is one of the titles on my to-be-read list. "A Vintage Affair" I read a few books back. Really liked it. A mystery to go along with your cruise theme? Mary Higgins Clark's "Santa Cruise."

I mostly compare translations with the originals and sometimes find fault, but as I have a degree in translation studies I may be able to shed some light on the subject from that point of view. Translators have to make lots of choices when they start a translation, beginning with how the client - with literary works it's usually a publisher - wants the text translated. Before a translation is made, decisions have to be made about the target audience and what kind of style suits them best. You may want to get the flavour of the grammar and the style across, in which case it will probably feel very foreign and not very fluid, you might want to stress readability over absolute correctness or vice versa, or you might even want to localise it to the extent of making the story happen locally (like children's book translations sometimes do). If you get it wrong, or someone outside the target audience, who has different expectations, then reads the translation, they might not be happy with it, even if the target audience loves it. With the Laclos translation you mention, the publisher might, for instance, have requested that the text be localised so that it would feel more British, or the translator might even have had orders to modernise the language, because I think at least 'dotty' is a fairly new usage. It is interesting that both examples you cite are colloquial usages, because slang and colloquialisms can be extremely hard to get across in translations so that they have the same effect as they did in the original. The age of the translation matters as well. A contemporary translation of a classic will inevitably feel dated in a way that a modern translation will not, even if the modern translator has taken care to use language that reflects the era of the original. And of course it must be said that some translators are better than others at making their translations readable and convincing to the reader. Two translators can, stylistically speaking, produce translations that are adequate to the purpose or equivalent in effect to the original, that yet read like two different authors have rendered the same story. This is no coincidence, because good literary translations are works of art (this applies especially to verse translations, but also to prose). A translator can be technically very good, but unless they also have at least a spark of artistic writing ability, they will not produce translations that satisfy the reader like an original work of literature does. There is an interesting discussion of this sort of thing in chapter 6 of Umberto Eco's Mouse or Rat? Translation as negotiation. He picks up a discussion by another linguist and takes it a bit further in discussing the relative merits of several different translations of Dante's Inferno. Of course, translators of poetry face even bigger challenges than translators of prose, and sometimes the most accurate translation of a poem is the one that abandons the original...

laticauda(OK - zone 7) I think I read somewhere that to make a room have clean air (not just cleaner air) it takes like 15-20 6-inch potted plants. For one room. If plants can make a room clean (not just cleaner) why United States Enviromental Protection Agency does not write about it at all? I am just finishing this memoir and liked it much better than I'd imagined I would. The family will certainly stay in my mind. And what a vivid portrait of the town of Welch, West Virginia. ( I lived in W.VA for 3 years and the experience was unforgettable).

I wish others who have read this would post commentaries....

The Glass Castle was one of my favorite reads this year. I agree, although the hardships and living conditions were at times horrendous, I never felt that the book was depressing. In fact, it was quite humorous at times.
As for whether it was enhanced or not.....I find it hard to believe many memoirs are not enhanced in some way or another. For example, how can a person remember dialogue spoken 30 years prior? It doesn't much matter to me as long as it is a good read :)

I agree that most memoirs would have to be "enhanced", as you say. Possibly, one of the functions of a good book editor? The Glass Castle, IMHO, had a positive message, at the end. The 4 kids made it out of that dysfunctional family with their wits and decency still intact. I found it inspiring in the way they were loyal to each other, as siblings, and unified in their goals and values.

I liked this so much better than "Angela's Ashes", which is similar, but perhaps that is because I am American, not Irish. BTW, I am surprised I have not heard rumors of a movie being made of Walls' work. I think it would make an interesting film....

I enjoyed this memoir, and read it on the heels of another, The Liar's Club by Mary Karr, about her dysfunctional family. It was interesting to compare and contrast the two tales. I do marvel at the human spirit, and how people (children) can survive and persevere in such long-term difficult situations.

It doesn't bother me that some of the dialogue or exchanges may be reconstructed or embroidered. I assume the essence of the story is true, and read it for the spirit of the story.

I just finished this book. Perhaps some of it was "enhanced," but it was all (sadly) believable.

It puzzled me that there was so little resentment expressed by the children, even as adults.

I thought the book was well written and provided a very smooth reading experience with no need ever to go back and re-read something.

Woodnymph, I also enjoyed it more than Angela's Ashes. That one, as I recall it now, at several years' distance, was truly grim, but there was a redeeming humor in "Glass Castle" that was missing in "Ashes."

The fact that the parents were living according to their own ideals also made what their children had to bear seem (to me, at least) not quite so awful. I couldn't help smiling when I found that, even at the end of the book, they were still insisting on living their lives that way, and their daughter had come to terms with it. Sad, but it somehow left me feeling uplifted.

I hope I haven't misremembered anything about it and made a stupid comment; it's been a few years since I had it from the library.

Yes, it would make a very interesting movie! But perhaps not enough violent action and sex to sell well? (I am being cynical!)
