went to lowes and showed the gardener there the photos. she told us they were getting too much water and thats why they were getting fungus at the bottom. moved the plants to another bed with lesser water through the day and they seem to be fine. now, coming back to my vegetable bed, how do i get it to drain better. while making it i put in a layer of industrial fabric, 1-2 inches of organic peat humus and then 2-3 inches of a mix of top soil and organic peat humus. the gardener said that the peat humus at the bottom must be retaining too much water

I would like to know the outcome of the newspapers mixed with grass clippings ont the lawn though. Well, if you put large sheets, it clogs up the mower pretty quickly, stopping the blade, and you have to flip it on its side and clean out the mess. Now if you want to sit there and crumple each individual sheet of newspaper into a ball and place those balls about 3 feet apart on the lawn, and then tip the mower up and let it down on the ball, it will shred it pretty well, and you do this for the whole lawn, it works. As long as you don't mind having a lawn covered in fine confetti that the mower refused to pickup. As an added bonus, as you lever up and down the mower, happily filling your grass catcher bag with shredded paper and clippings and leaving a white confetti trail behind, you may well find your Significant Other with that classic hand-on-hip pose that us compost wackos have come to know so well. I also tried putting newspaper in a large plastic trash bin, filling it with water and a bit of nitrogen fertilizer. Thats gets pretty smelly quickly. I also tried using an electric drill with a bulb auger to pulverize the soggy newspaper into glop, then use the glop in the compost. Glop dries out, same thing as non-glopped newspaper re composting. So newspaper covered by grass clipping mulch in the border it is.

are you absolutely sure on this ID ... there are a couple holiday type conifers.. which are sold as basically throw away ... .. plants after the holidays ...usually sold in 4 inch pots ... [google of the latin.. tells me this is one of them] if it was outdoors when you got it ... it is probably dormant ... and could probably be planted in mother earth ... subject to the horrible OH clay down in columbus ... i would NEVER try to winter over a conifer/tree.,... in a 4 inch pot ... i would.. at a min ... repot it.. with NO root disturbance.. to a one gal... with proper media ... i might even just sink pot and all in the larger pot ... its all about maintaining the roots dormant... on days temps spike.. as tiny pots.. warm fast ... trees ... of which conifers are ... like a sip of water ... and then near total drainage .... even in august.. in MI ... i might water mine once a month or so .... but then.. i dont have then in 4 inch pots ... let it near dry .... in between waterings ... and do fully understand ... a dormant tree does not need all that much water .... its also problematic.. that we dont know the media already in the pot ... media for production.. in a small pot.. can be wildly divergent from what you might need ... it might hold too much water on purpose.. and that purpose is NOT yours ... you are dreaming that your sunporch might only be a few degrees warmer ... i smoke in my attached garage ... and it can be 15 to 30 degrees warmer than outside.. on sunny days... in mid winter ..... and that wont be good ... you are spot on on the wind issue .... reducing that is good ... ken ps: dannaher... i meant to enable you ... i did not expect you to go asking them.. how to take care of a plant you bought elsewhere ... maybe the website will have info .... Your question is not completely clear. You want recommendations on an EDGING product to apply to the sidewalk-side of the existing mulched bed? It would make more sense to do away with the grass (make it all part of mulched bed) and apply a very short retaining wall of landscape blocks adjacent to the sidewalk. You’d have to backfill in a bit to make the bed one level. Like this.
