Gardening in the UK

Citronelles (Bush Lemon)

I maybe a little confused, hopefully someone can set me straight. Are Bush Lemons native to the UK? If so does anybody have any idea where I can get some seeds? I have seen a couple of websites that state they are very easy to grow from seed. That they are very seedy, and that they are very fragrant. I was also mislead, thinking they were native to Australia. Please Help!

Definitely NOT native to this area! We have mild winters, so you classify our gardening as zone 8, 9 or even 10, but our summers are nearer to your Zone 5. Some places over here have had overnight frosts in the last week.

If you're talking about a variety of Citrus limon, they do grow it in Australia - see the link below.

It would surely be easier for you to find a fresh fruit and collect the seeds yourself?

i am not familiar with this... but thought to myself.. scent varies over the season ... by late fall.. the leaves can be thick and leathery ... and not quite as fragrant as new shoots in spring ... so you got one good sniffer.. if you can define the scent.. with as much specificity as you did ...... but try again.. in spring ... if it should be IDd as such.. and worth keeping.. ken

Certainly possible, but you have to have a lot of patience to wait for flowers and fruits. In the very best citrus climates seedlings may flower in a minimum of 4-5 years. In a nearly impossible citrus climate (like here in the UK), seedlings take anything from 12 to 20 years to start fruiting. Rooting a cutting from your original plant, or growing a seedling and then grafting from your original plant, will shorten the process.

Lemon trees naturally have a much more open and straggly form than other citrus species. You could try cutting back the new growth by about two-thirds and hope this encourages some new shoots on the weaker side. However, in the UK you are unlikely to get any new flush of growth before the spring, and new shoots are always likely to appear close to your pruning cut. The tree looks a bit underfed. Do you fertise it regularly? Provide a higher nitrogen fertilser when temperatures are about to warm up again and the light is increasing.

Hello, I'd really like some of your bush lemon seed if possible. I have Aristolochia fimbriata, Bixa orellana, Caesalpinia pulcherrima seeds to trade now. Also have a large crop of Cananga odorata seed almost ripe. Will have some if the cockies don't get to them first. Regards, Brendon
