When a portion of a rhododendron dies like this, the usual cause is boytryosphaeria fungal infection, commonly known as branch or stem dieback. Unfortunately, there is no fungicide that can treat this infection once its symptoms become obvious. I would certainly check with your extension service or state agriculture department to confirm this diagnosis as photographs are no substitute for direct examination. Stressed plants - too wet, too dry, too hot - are prone to this kind of infection. Check the moisture level of the soil and do not water unless there's a need. If boytryosphaeria is confirmed, the best you can do is cut out the dead parts and provide what's left with ideal growing conditions. What species of cyclamen is growing under the rhododendron?

So far it looks as though your hibiscus died and was replaced by root sprouts from a nearby poplar (Populus) tree. Hence the discontinuation of flowering! If you dig down you may find a woody rootstock that stretches all the way to the parent tree. If that proves to be the case all of it should be removed before it thickens enough to start becoming additionally bothersome, harder to dig out and cut off. Or there was a poplar seedling in the pot with it when you bought it. Although that would usually have a single stem, that was slender near the base - dating back to when the seedling was tiny. Whereas a vaguely bamboo-like clump of vigorous, comparatively thick and non-tapering, similarly sized stems such as we see here is more typical of suckers coming from the running roots of an established tree. One part that wouldn't seem to fit this poplar seedling or suckers theory is the stems still being as short as they are after at least several years. Have you been cutting them to the ground every year or have they been freezing down on their own? If they keep freezing off then either it is some kind of poplar that somehow isn't hardy where you are, came in the pot with the hibiscus - or it is something else entirely that looks just like poplar suckers. And not like a hibiscus.
