Doublefile viburnums barely flowered this year -- why?
Comments (7)My v. doublefile 'Shasta' was planted from a 3-ga. nursery pot in spring '04. This picture was taken Memorial Day weekend '09. It bloomed sparsely its first couple years in the ground but has been reliable since. How was your weather last year? Did the shrub receive adequate moisture last summer & fall? How about exposure? Mine is located in full sun...but, we're on the coast with a constant marine layer so full sun here is less intense than inland. Buds for this year's flowers were set last summer so that's where I'd look for this spring's lack of flowers....See MoreWhy doesn't my butterfly bush bloom?
Comments (2)I would think the problem is not enough sun. It could also be a nutrient imbalance. Too much nitrogen relative to phosphorus and potassium can cause lots of green growth without much flowering. Pruning should not be an issue since they bloom on new wood. I cut mine down to about a foot tall in the spring. You can wait to prune until you see new growth to determine how far the die-back was in winter. Leaving it up in winter protects the plant somewhat and provides winter interest too. For me the store-bought butterfly bushes always performed poorly. They usually only lasted a year or two and never got any size to them. Then I wintersowed some seed I got in a swap and have had the resulting plants for almost 5 years now. The one in full sun shoots up to almost 7' tall every summer after cutting back to 12" in spring. It is loaded with blooms that I deadhead to keep it blooming until a hard frost. I have never fertilized it, but we do have a more clay based soil that retains nutrients. I think some of the more cultivated varieties and hybrids have probably sacrificed hardiness and vigorousness for the sake of compact size and new colored blooms....See MoreReason why a hosta doesn't flower?
Comments (5)Hi Ken, I think the point you missed was that there are other hosta's flurishing. FGT isn't suffering other than no flowers. Other hosta's under that tree are Thunderbolt (flowerd) 3 Francis Williams, Golden Prayer and Eye Declare. All flowering and ready to eat my house. Most of those hostas have been there over many years. The roots could be a problem but there are others there and an extensive perennial garden on both sides. This little stinker just doesn't want to flower. I only fertilize my grass 2X a year and my perennial garden gets compost. So maybe some year it will surprise me. As for the large maples the only one we have near us is on the parkway in front of the house. Sucks the life out of everything. I have some perennials in the front and annuals and every year I have to dig out a garbage can of roots before I can plant the annuals. What a thug of a tree....See MoreWhy doesn't this Phal open Fully?
Comments (7)i kind of wonder wgat would happen if you got theis certain spike to produce a keiki... on rare occasion a plant will have 1 part of the plant that will have a genetic nutation thats not present in the rest of the plant (which is how the washington oranage came to be)maybe this is the case with your phal. i wonder if you were to make it produce a keiki, would the flowers off of the F2 plant stay somewhat closed as this spike is doing now.......See Moreellenr22 - NJ - Zone 6b/7a
