Amaryllis (Hippeastrum) in the garden

Do any of you in the UK grow amaryllis in the garden, permanently or otherwise. In the USA they are grown outside in climates with similar temperatures but not with our on off seasons I suspect. Would extra deep planting help, as with some of the South African bulbs?

Hello,
Here in Pembrokeshire, South West Wales, they are grown outdoors permanently. When being planted, a minimum covering of 6 inches of soil above the shoulder of the bulb is the method used.

I've grown them outside here for the past 7 or 8 years and flowering is rarely a problem, albeit a bit late - usually May/June. We don't get anything other than a light frost here, so they are planted with the 'shoulders' barely covered. In NY state and elsewhere, I understand they are planted deeply as mentioned by Gerald.

Now any of you growing Clivias outside? Got a couple of nice big clumps close to the house wall and boy do they flower well :)

I can rotate the pots three times a day. They continuously lean toward the light. So if I keep them in their place for 3 days, they tip over. I don't mind rotating them often. At least, I take a few minutes for myself in every day.

Well, Michelle, Last summer I planted 8 bulbs in a whiskey barrel which would be similar to planting directly in the ground, and I planted them just as I would have planted them in a pot. They were at least half out of the soil, knowing they would be pulled in the fall, they were actually pulled sooner for a hurricane and had to be replanted in pots, but for most of the summer they did fine. Now, our southern gardeners who leave them in the ground all year would probably plant them deeper, probably entirely covered, but up North, there is no need to. Donna By the way Michelle, in case you missed the post about 'Splash", it is quite fragrant, we were pleasantly surprised, and my husband couldn't keep his nose out of it..!

Breck's and Robersta's Gardens list them as -15 degrees F, but there are some skeptical comments when I Google these plants. That's why I was asking if anyone actually had them in our area. Actually, it sounds too good to be true, so it may not be. If they're not too expensive I might try some next year, but I'll be reading up on them this winter. I hate to see anything die.

Naturally Hippeastrum are not evergreen they do go into a state of dormancy after the summers. When the leaves die back just cut them off, the bulbs can be lifted and then replanted outside into the ground in the last weeks of winter. Plant them in a position of either full sun/ half a day of full sun or a whole day of shade-dappled sunlight. Do not plant them in shade. Hippeastrum do fine without fertiliser although it doesn't hurt to feed them. The flower stalks grow to different lengths depending how much sun they get i noticed my have short flower stalks in full sun all day and longer taller stalks in dappled shade. And oh yes everyone is right about planting the bulbs so you can just see the neck.

Thanks both. Thought someone must be in the UK tropical belts. I will try 1 or 2 in my garden, and free up some greenhouse space.

I have one growing outside it tends to flower most years but does sometimes miss a year.

I am in Oregon, U.S. Our climate is supposed to be similar to the U.K. climate. I am puzzled: is this Amaryllis belladonna people are growing outdoor or Hippeastrum? I would LOVE to grow Hippeastrum outdoor (I have a collection of about 100 I grow in a greenhouse [winter minimum 50-55F]), but from what I understand, only H. x johnsonii is supposed to be hardy (to 5F or so).
