Jacaranda seeds
Comments (6)I collected fallen pods, some were not "open". Inside are (as already mentioned)50-100+ seeds. They are translucent tan in color with the 1/4" dia seed itself a very dark brown. Overall they are "flat" with tissue-paper thin "wings" which is the envelope containing the actual seed. The oval, oblong to round envelope may measure about 3/8" to 1/2" and 100 seeds (not the shell) will weigh less than one gram. I've tried jiffy-pots with commercial potting soil (MiracleGro) inside a humidor (to retain moisture) with bottom heat to about 80F. I've tried scattering on a bed of potting soil with 1/16"-1/8" course desert sand as a cover. So far, in several attempts, no luck germinating. Any comments or suggestions? Comments (18)I would not recommend Crepe Myrtles AT ALL they provide ZERO shade and are best used as a border tree for privacy and they grow Straight up and down even as a mature tree. I always shake my head when people plant these in their front lawns as they are going to be very disappointed. They are the WORST tree for shade and are on the most hated list for tree preservation groups because the cities always tries to pass these off as planting shade trees to meet quota. They are again only good for border trees and a punch of color not a shade tree AT ALL. I always try to warn people away from planting these in their front lawn.. ughh ..I would pick a Jacaranda every time just plant it close to the edge of your front lawn so the roots are not a problem and provide shade to your lawn and sidewalk. Also FYI if the tree roots rise which they shouldn't if planted deep enough and in proper planting sacks , the city is responsible for maintaining that tree in most cities. Within 5-15 feet in from the sidewalk most cities have responsibility for tree growth maintenance ie tree roots which is why I encourage people to plant as close the curb as possible. Consult your local tree foundations as to city responsibility to canopy within 5-15 feet.. Also while these trees are incredibly fast growing trees it will take some time before it ever becomes an issue if at all, we are talking decades.. by then your tree is most likely under protection of city tree ordinances. LUCKY YOU!...See MoreJacaranda tree help
Comments (3)the plant behind it is leaning also .. the same way .. and crikey if it doesnt look like the mailbox leans the other way ... what the heck is going on down there ... lol ... unless of course... the house across the street isnt plumb ... which is what i am using to gauge ... this didnt just happen .... your tree is already adjusting to the lean by growing upwards the other way ... if you straighten the trunk .. BY DIGGING IT OUT AND REPLANTING IT ... then it will probably tip the other way ... i highly doubt you will straighten it by trying to bend it back with a stake ... and bamboo isnt going to do it ... i vote for letting it do its own thing ... but then.. im lazy ... lol ... ken ps: was there any big storm the year you planted it????...See MoreSuiko
