peach leafcurl

We live in London and everyone I know has either given up growing peaches or are about to do so because of leaf curl. The trees grow too large to cover with plastic. Fungicide spray before leaf bud break and just after, doesn't seem to work very well. Could I paint on a fungicide or wax? What is the answer? Should we just leave peach growing to folk living in warmer and drier climates? Maybe I should graft over with apricot, or some other stone fruit? Any thoughts? MacD
