Dead frogs!?

We keep finding dead frogs in and around our pond. Initially you spot the frog very lethargic and pale in colour - a day or two later the frog will be dead (usually still in the same spot). I've also noticed they seem to have little bumps/sores on them. Any ideas....old age, normal for this time of year. The 4 fish in the pond are a little bigger (around 3 to 4 inches), could they be attacking the frogs?

Its probebly a disease called redleg, its spreading all over the Uk

That is so sad. I hope that some of your frogs survive. I didn't realise that they could be a yellow colour. I thought that the disease caused red colouring all over the body but especially on the legs, so that was interesting to read. I am so glad that none of mine have shown symptoms. Don't we have to report it Alan? I can't remember who to, but I remember them (whoever it was)saying that they wanted to keep an eye on how it was moving across the country.

I ran a bubbler all winter and still had 4 frogs die. I did find one more that was alive while I was scooping out some dead leaves. I think this one may have survived because it was under the leaves whereas the others had been on top of the leaves. I think unless you can keep the water temp fairly constant or its change very gradual, your frogs will be at the mercy of the weather no matter if it's the pump or the deicer or a bubbler is running.

Although I've NOT tried this myself, I remember someone posting on this forum that sinking some folded-up quilt batting by weighting it with a rock or two will increase chances of frogs surviving winter. Of course the quilt batting needs to be in an area of pond(deep enough) where the water doesn't freeze. The frogs supposedly hibernate between the layers of batting. After a long period of freezing temps, then a recent warm spell, I found a few dead frogs as well as some live ones who thought it was already spring. (False alarm- it's cold again!) Fish(mostly koi) made it through the winter. Pond is @ 40 in. deep in very center.

This will be my third year for my 1800 gal pond which is about 32" deep. I also lost 3 of my largest Bullfrogs and haven't seen the other 8 to 10 smaller ones yet this spring. Had no problems in 2005 and 2006. Hard to say what happened. Sad part is the 3 that died used to come and eat out of my hand and would let me pick them up. Witz

Is your pond completely frozen over? Do you have fish in your pond? Does it freeze solid? My little 600 gal pond is frozen over but I have a bubbler keeping a hole open. I have fish. I also had a lot of frogs this year. I sunk "frog pots" plastic flower pots with batting in them for the frogs to snuggle into. I have tried to get extensive information on frogs and have not been very successful. I would sink a frog pot or 2 and put him in the pond if it does not freez solid.

Hi Shelly. What s hame if it is red leg virus.

Please do the Froglife frog survey mentioned in a thread below. Froglife can give you more information if you need it, and they are trying to map the spread of the disease.

Remember that you should now not offer anyone plants, fish, frogspawn or tadpoles from your pond as this would spread it further.

Many thanks for all your replies - from the information I have now read on the web I would say it is almost definatly red leg disease. Incidently, we are in Stockport - SK4.

i have a pet frog.........zippy his name ........ we play baseball and ave picnics........welll at least we use to.........u c he caught redleg and he started to struggle to finsh his breakfast and other meals now hes in intensive care on the frog ward its pretty serious.............wish him well guys he needs it baddddddddd..........lyl zippy x x x
