I know this post is old, but I wanted to inject more than I said earlier. I've learned to hardly use a deicer at all, and not a big one. It's only to let a small hole open to allow gases to come out. I believe when I had all those frogs dye, it was because I used the large deicer way too much and they probably went in and out of hibernation too often. I've learned my lesson and keep the pump running absolutely as long as I can (without it freezing), and only use the deicer to keep a small hole open. And, of course, I always have a lot of leaves and muck in the bottom for them to get comfy in.

Is your pond completely frozen over? Do you have fish in your pond? Does it freeze solid? My little 600 gal pond is frozen over but I have a bubbler keeping a hole open. I have fish. I also had a lot of frogs this year. I sunk "frog pots" plastic flower pots with batting in them for the frogs to snuggle into. I have tried to get extensive information on frogs and have not been very successful. I would sink a frog pot or 2 and put him in the pond if it does not freez solid.

I hope that works. It is sad to any of god's little creatures die unnecessarily and due to our actions so I share your concern. It may be that you will only find them in there right after rains depending on what you climate is like and what species you have around. I would not call them stupid, nor are they smart in any way like us. Millennia of evolution have equipped them to reproduce quite well in ponds, lakes, streams and ephemeral pools quite well. Swimming pools, sadly, they are not equipped for. If they could think, they would think they have found a nice rain-filled hollow and jump right in. In fact, they have a much more base response.

That is so sad. I hope that some of your frogs survive. I didn't realise that they could be a yellow colour. I thought that the disease caused red colouring all over the body but especially on the legs, so that was interesting to read. I am so glad that none of mine have shown symptoms. Don't we have to report it Alan? I can't remember who to, but I remember them (whoever it was)saying that they wanted to keep an eye on how it was moving across the country. Alison
