Hi Pomme8916, there are many types of wild poppy dependant on which part of the world you are thinking of. Here in the U.K. the common type is Papaver Rhoeas. These are normally an orange/red color, however these have been selected over a number of years and other colors have become available. A Hilltop on the Marne by Mildred Aldrich is a day to day experience of the first months of the war. I found Vera Brittain's a Testament of Youth (Both book and series, and there is a new movie coming soon). Her letters are gut wrenching, especially those to Roland Leighton, a budding poet. It still makes me sick to the heart, that so many brilliant men were killed to satisfy the fear and warmongering of others. Flanders poppies,Papaver rhoeas performs best if sown in late fall in the southern regions of the U.S. The red Flanders poppy was first described as a flower of remembrance by Colonel John McCrae, who was Professor of Medicine at McGill University of Canada before World War One. Colonel McCrae had served as a gunner in the Boer War, but went to France in World War One as a medical Officer with the first Canadian Contingent.
