Ponds in the UK

algae globule photos

I have still not identified my jelly globules, the pond has an explosion of them. I'm sure its a type of algae..

So, I have borrowed my sons microscope and with my digital camera have taken some photos. Its fascinating looking at microscopic level, all the pics are of the jelly blobs, apart from one of an amoeba. I have never used a microscope before and simply held the camera lens over the microscope...it works! Any more ideas on what it is??

They are really interesting when they are enlarged--a whole other world!

Must try to get some microscopic pictures of pond creatures. But even though the microscopic views of the algae are interesting the best bit is getting rid of the yellow globby things!!!

I've had a look in my books but can't find anything
that resembles them. I think its these that killed the aliens in "War of the Worlds" !

What camera have you got and which settings did you use?
I must have a go.

Mark, phals drop bottom leaves when they begin to put out new one,its a cycle.the only time you should worry is if they drop more than one or two and if the leaf starts to yellow at the base where its attached to the stem, this would indicate a fungal or bacterial infection.your plant from what I can see looks healthy and has a few green root tips, which shows it is growing,so its perfectly healthy.just continue with the care your giving and watch that you don't over water this will rot the roots also you can give it a bit of fertilizer about once or twice per month and you should be fine.your doing great already.Velleta

Lefty7 Can you buy this at Petsmart or Pet Supplies Plus or do I have to order it online? Bugsb Thought I remembered you posting this tool when you first bought it. Going to order one just to have it onhand. With ponds you never know when you are going to need it. Just love how the algae forms a little nest when you take it off the brush. Too bad we couldn't manufacture them and sell them to birds. lol. Jenny

African Violet Seedling or Lichen/Moss/Algae?

Irina, thanks for the helpful input. Unfortunately, I did use all the seed from the one pod that I had. :-( I planted it in two different containers. I will follow your advice and weed out the liverwort (what an awful sounding name for a plant! lol), leaving the containers under the lights for a while longer and hope for the best! As soon as Firebird blooms again, I will try pollinating a couple of its flowers once more, too. And next time I will certainly nuke the seed starting mix before sowing. Another question: how close to the lights should the seed be placed? One guide that I read said place them at the same level as my other violets. Another said to place them 6 inches below the lights. Any outdoor seed that I start inside, I place just 2 inches below the lights. What would y'all advise? :-)

I've been going by the BBB method that kurtv uses and have had a great pool ever since. I think that you need to get your chlorine levels up. The SWG makes chlorine, so why can't you add some already made to get the pool up to shock levels? Last year I went on vacation and left my the fathers to take care of the pool. They dumped shock and yellow out in it and I came home to a green pool. I immediately started reading and decided to try the BBB method. After all, the chart was easy to read and there was lots of information there...more than what I got from any other site. I stopped using the chlorinator that came with the pool and started using bleach. I made sure to rinse the filters often until I didn't see anymore green. It has been a breeze ever since. The green has never reappeared. I will say, that I took a sample to Leslie's to see what they said, too, and if I had listened to them, I would have added a ton of chemicals that I didn't need. I followed the info on the BBB site, took the water to a local pool store, and they told me I was doing great. (I buy my acid from them...but that's it). The only thing I don't like is that I can't register on that site. I was getting ready to sign in and they closed the new registrations on that day. If I have a question, I post here. The only thing that I got in the beginning was calcium on my tile that released from the new grout. I use vinegar and a scrub brush to get rid of that. Good luck!

Yep, a real puzzle, cant believe I'm the only one with these jelly blob aliens.

I used my ordinary fuji digital camera with zoom on and off. Thats all. I just held the camera lens over the microscope eye piece & with a bit of jiggling about got the photos..its very easy.

Please share any photos you get, we can all become micro-biologists!

I forgot to add, I took the photos at night, in the dark, with a lamp/bulb positioned on the table for best light to the microscope mirror. It was dead easy!!

Spoke too soon, the aliens are back! I hadn't had a good look at the pond for a couple of weeks, and they had snuck in. However, have just been out for a good cleanout and have my trusty net ready...

They won't get far this time.

I was pottering round the pond plant section of my garden centre today having a quick check to see if there was any newt tadpoles as mentioned in other postings. I saw a clump of green bulbous globules in a bunck of about 15. I was wondering about whether it could be eggs, larvea etc and had thought of your algae things. I was about to ask if they minded me having some when I noticed the bush above the plant tray. It was a bramble with loads of blackberries and the mistery eggs were unripe berries that had fallen in a few weeks earlier!
Luckily I had noticed before asking!
