Goodbye blanket weed.

I have just bought a carton of Goodbye Blanket Weed by Nishikoi, there are 8 sachets of ( friendly harmless bacteria and enzymes which eat the food that blanket weed lives on) i put a sachet into my waterfall each week for 8 weeks and bingo no more algae, i hope it works at £14-99 a go.The problem is in 8 weeks time it may go on its own, so i will never know if it worked or not. Has anyone tried this product, is it any good, have you tried other products that have worked, and how do you know, did you waste your money to, now i`ve got you worried.

I use barley straw too, which is natural, and a lot cheaper. You just have to remember to put it in BEFORE the blanket weed takes hold (Barley straw works by the chemicals released as it decomposes - and you have to wait a while before it starts decomposing)

I'm always a bit suspicious of chemicals and "treatments". If they work at all, they tend to be expensive, and you have to keep buying them... the only stuff I use is something to remove the chlorine etc from tap water when I need to top up the pond.

We said goodbye to Ginger on Friday

I'm so sorry about your Ginger girl. Pets are such a wonderful part of our lives, so forgiving, loving, honest, on and on. Ginger was a lucky girl to have you too. Adopting a senior is so kind. Sigh, I have a senior nearing her end of life soon. She's 14 1/2 , can hardly see or hear , her enzymes have been off the chart for years and she keeps on ticking. It will be hard seeing her go even though I've been preparing for this for quite a while. I imagine as always, time will heal the tears and our other pets will need our attention. It's still a tough time.

Goodbye Miele W4842, Hello Electrolux Wave Touch
Q

Larsi, today we went to set up return for Electrolux washer that was having problems. The guy at appliance who sold it to us said that we needed to call Electrolux, tell them the prob and ask for a R.C.M number, then call him with it and he will order me another one, so that they can get refunded from Electrolux. Electrolux wanted to send out a service repair. I told them that i didn't trust this machine due to the rubbing and had called the authorized repair man, told him the prob and he said he would ask for a new one, as this could be seal or tub or both. He said he wouldnt keep one that was bad from day one. So after Electrolux figured out i wasnt going the repair route, they told me to call the store and tell them they had a seven day return policy. Told her it was delevered last thurs.and that store was passing buck to them. Electrolux got the store on the phone, told them i said no repair and then electrolux said the 7 day return policy for a electrolux did not start until unit was delivered, not from purchase date! Store said it would get with their RCM people and that electrolux may give them some credit for it. I am not sure they will get full credit. Anyway, i should hear from store tomorrow to tell me that they have ordered me another set as the dryer was dammaged and they did not check it over before delivery. I don't think that it was my place to have to do all the leg work. It should have been store, but salseman said if i called that it would carry more weight. I think that he knew that i would be told to have it repaired and he just didn't want to tell us that. I will rest easier when they call tomorrow with a time line of when new set is in. They will reverse the dryer door as they didn't do it with this one even though i asked for it, but my DH was going to do it anyway. Fingers crossed i get a good set, no scratches, dents, or detergent tray that does not hang on the front corner which this one does. THEN, i will be in laundry heaven!!!!

Goodbye, English Ivy...?
Q

The one that slays me is the romantic notion of "The Ivy Covered Cottage" which is ever popular with those so inclined. I have heard this BS nonsense from so many people wanting just that that I really have to ask what it this wide world does that look conjure up in their heads? What is so wonderful looking about a plant eating your home to the point you can no longer decipher what color the bricks are? On my block alone there are several Ivy Covered Cottages. These are the brick homes built in the 1920's and 30' here in the inner city. I have a stucco on wood home which would crumble under ivy, the very idea fills me with horror. I don't like vines in the first place anyway, they look messy and overgrown to my eye. like stuff that needs to be cleared out as underbrush. Its an art form. These guys trim the green monsters every year so the windows are exposed and the open space is square. They don't want it on the wood part up there by the roof so that gets trimmed yearly into a straight line. Sometimes things get out of hand, procrastination sets in and ivy misses being trimmed for a year, then two then..... It makes no diff to the ivy what it suckers its roots to, roof, wood bricks or that really nice look which I've seen so often----ivy growing inside the window between the screened storm window and the inner glass window. It looks really nice when they just cut it below the window leaving the dead stuff in there for years. Yes, I have seen this. The trees are also Ivy covered. Well, maybe that entire trunk covered in these triffids is appealing to some but when that stuff gets to the top with no where else to climb its starts hanging down in a very creepy looking way. I suppose the bats love it and the squirrels can hang like Tarzan the Ape Man as they jump from one swinging vine to the next. Oh, and the stuff blooms when it turns into a tree itself trying to cannibalize the support tree.

hawksster: I completely disagree with that statement. There is so much science/research is false, fake, unfounded, and/or fraudulent - it's mind blowing." Gary S: I actually found your above statement, insulting. In any case, we have peer review, to try and avoid such introduction of fabrications No, he's right. Latest example: http://www.pbs.org/newshour/rundown/sugar-industry-artificially-sweetened-harvard-research/ There are real life (and death) consequences to that. Another example is the peanut issue - scientist claimed for the longest time that one should avoid feeding peanuts to infants because they would develop allergies. Just a couple of years ago, they changed their mind, you actually should feed the peanuts early on to prevent peanut allergies later in life. There's real life consequences to that too, there are now multiple generations of people allergic to peanuts as a result. Another one is the cholesterol issue, for the past 50 years people have been told that cholesterol rich foods like eggs should be avoided. Again, just a few years ago they changed their mind, cholesterol that's ingested has very little effect on cholesterol levels in the blood, the liver controls the vast majority of that. Yet another blooper with huge consequences, altering people's diets for half a century and depriving them of nutritious foods unnecessarily. I'm a big fan of science but there's major issues in the way research is peer reviewed, and the self-correcting mechanism appears to be flawed. Or way too slow. Many people have paid the price.

Where do you put the barley straw, i thought maybe in the top of the waterfall where it wont be seen, would it work there. I will let you know if i think my £14-99 has been worth it, but i think next year i will try barley straw, what month do you think is the best time to introduce it.

I suspend the bag of straw under the outlet from filter so the chemicals have to travel the length of pond before it hits the pump :-)

Top of the waterfall should be good. Just needs to be somewhere where there is a good flow, and such that the decomposition by-products ciculate in the pond downstream as much as possible. When to use it... I find it won't start decomposing until the weather gets warmer in Spring. So that's when I put it in.

It's unlikely to stop blanket weed completely, there will probably be "dead spots" where the water doesn't circulate so much, but in general it should keep it under control. Actually I like to have a little blanket weed - the wildlife likes it...

By the way any new planting (if soil or compost in the planters) is likely to sprout great swathes of blanketweed no matter what you do, because of the concentration of nutrients. I think new ponds are likely to suffer too, until they mature and reach a "balance".

I have tried everything in the past to stop blanket weed, chemicals, the bio clare products and barley straw with no success. Last year I finally redesigned my pond to include a vege-filter which is a 1 foot deep channel running around the edge of the main pond with the filters feeding in at one end and the water going into the pondat the other. This was heavily planted, all plants in baskets with gravel only, and water cress was put in to finish it off (a recomendation from this site).
This year hardly a sign of blanket weed. The water cress and other planting uses up the nutrients fantastically. I even introduced duck weed last year to try and control it and this has almost dissapeared through lack of nutrients. All this in a 300 gallon pond with over 15 12 to 18 inch Koi plus goldfish their babies. A vege-filter works if you can fit one and put in the water cress to finish it off.

I've been removing the blanket weed by hand so far, trying very hard not to remove baby newts with it - would like to try the barley straw, but a couple of you mention the water circulation. Mine is a wildlife pond without pump.
Will barley straw do any good in there, and where do I put it? thanks.

BirminghamRob What planets are you using in your veggi filter?
I made one out of some liner that i had left over from the pond but it's leaking like hell so going to make a version 2 useing expansion tanks.

I was going to use reeds that i all ready have plus some cress. i have a green water problem, my fish eat the blanket weed before it takes hold

dean33 I put a big range in to see what would work well. Almost everythig has grown well but the real star has definitely been watercress. It took a while to get going and I did have a bit of blanket weed at the start of the year but as soon as the cress was growing strongly it dissappeared. I thin the cress back evry month to keep it in check a bit, it swamps the other plants, but otherwise it needs no maintenance. In addition I have Zantendentia, various Irises, Stipa zebrinus and a few other bits and pieces. It is a long filter (surrounding 2 sides of the pond) so the water takes some time to get all the way through, I think this is important. It also has the bonus of being a big bio filter.

Goodbye blanket weed.
