You plant it the same way you plant corn. If you are growing it for the seedheads, you need to plant in a block for adequate pollination. I don't know if you have to plant in a block if all you want is the canes for their sweet juice. How close or how far apart you plant it is up to you. I plant broomcorn, also a sorghum, about 1 foot apart in rows about 1' to 2' apart because I mulch and don't have to do any weeding. If you are going to have to get into the beds to weed, you might want to plant your plants 1' apart in rows 3' apart to give you space to get in there and hoe out the weeds. I'd plant the seed 1/2 to 3/4" of an inch beneath the soil surface if you have good sandy loam or clayey loam soil or about 1" to 1 1/4" if you have very dry sandy soil. Water it well and keep the soil moist until it sprouts. Once it has developed roots and is growing well, it should be able to get by almost entirely on rainfall. Sorghum is very drought tolerant. It is a plant that germinates best when soil temperatures are in the 65-70 degree range, so it might be a bit early to plant it yet.

HI, I, too, have Stargazer lily seeds. I read that you are supposed to hold the flake up to the light and you will see the seed inside of the flake. Those are the ones that will germinate. I have 35 stargazers and I let one pod on each of them ripen until they almost opened. I am so sorry that I did that now, because at the same place I read about how to tell if the flake is viable, they said to never let the pods stay on the stem because it weakens the bulb by taking the energy and nutrients the plant produces and puts it into seed production which in turn, will hurt the next years flower production. I'd rather have the flowers, and buy new plants than take a risk on having lousy blooms. I'll never do that again, but that's me. I just felt you needed to know the whole story on stargazer lily seeds. Hope this helps you, debra

You will need to establish the botanical name of the Hosta. Cultivars don't matter to quarantine it's the parent plant. There are a long list of Hosta species that ARE allowed into Australia as seed. I will put the link at the bottom and hope that works - the way to search is through AQIS ICON search of the data base. If your species is OK then all you need to do is ensure 1. seeds are labelled with the full botanical name (special names or colours etc can be added for the person you are sending to of course but there must be a full botanical name first) 2. seeds must be clean and free of soil, husks, insects or other contaminants. 3. if you are sending permitted seed, don't complicate things by including "bonus" seed of other species as they might not be permitted and in that case the whole lot goes in the furnace. If you have difficulties you can contact me through "my page" and I'll try to help http://www.aqis.gov.au/icon32/asp/ex_casecontent.asp?intNodeId=8416507&intCommodityId=24502&Types=none&WhichQuery=Go+to+full+text&intSearch=1&LogSessionID=0 Here is a link that might be useful: Australian quarantine list of permitted hosta by seed
