Which book-oriented publications do you read?

I'm thinking of subscribing to the Times Literary Supplement (getting a free sample copy first ;-) ). And I was wondering which book and/or writing publications do you folks read? Which are worth taking a look at? Right now I only regularly read the book review sections from The Los Angeles Times and The New York Times.

I subscribe to Pages and Bookmarks. I'm not going to renew my subscription to Pages though but I really like Bookmarks. They review all the newer books out,tend to stay away from the lighter stuff and always do a feature piece on a well known author,alive or dead.

I subscribe to Pages and used to subscribe to Bookmarks as well. I let the Bookmarks subscription end because I liked Pages more. While Bookmarks had more information on the books it covered, Pages has more variety. Whenever I receive an issue of Pages it is like being a kid again and receiving the Sears Christmas catalog -- I want everything in it!

I also read The Washington Post's Book World section every Sunday.

I haven't read those, but felt the same way about the Twilight series. I hate vampire stuff and resisted all the hype about books, but then my dil was reading them and she convinced me to try one. They are definitely not high literature, but were so much FUN. The author really captured that feeling as a teen that I remember but no longer experience (nor have I for 40+ years) of emotional/sexual longing without there being any sex at all in the books. They are set in the NW so it was fun to see references to where I have lived my whole life. Then I couldn't believe that I saw the movies, too. Sheesh, now THAT"S embarrassing! I'll check out Pretty Little Liars.

This month my Book Club read: 1,000 White Women-The Journals of May Dodd by Jim Fergus I thought it was wonderful! I'm usually not a big fan of historical fiction, but this was great! Based on a true event, and then the author writes about what could have happened. Back in the 1850's the Cheyanne Indians wanted to increase their tribe numbers, so they asked the US govt to "trade" 1,000 white women for 1,000 horses. The US govt said no, but in the book, they agree. Very interesting idea. Characters were outstanding!! Written in journal form and quick read. Some language & violence esp at the end, but it's not too bad. Next month we read: Whistling in the Dark We read Water for Elephants at the beginning of the year and I thought it was okay. Normally would have never read about the circus. Others seemed to like it more then me. Read Life of Pi, but it took me about 3-4 times to get through it! Has anyone read Middlesex? I want to know if it's worth reading. Ii don't mind the topic, but it seemed really hard to get into? I've got my list made of all the books you guys have recommended. Teresa-who once had a dream about being locked in a library all night. (Wouldn't be so bad!)

Mariannese's comment is EXACTLY what the concept of my post (well, actually the WashPost blogger's post) is meant to imply. Not a book for someone who has never read a book, by his or her own choice. But a book that has moved you to some great extent -- whether by teaching you a lesson of compassion or love or understanding, or encouraging you to follow a dream, or simply by transporting you to a different world that you would probably never have the opportunity to experience. The kind of book that you know you always want on your bookshelf to reread over and over again -- one that you must own. And for a child, the ownership factor can mean a great deal, esp if that child comes from a poor (financially speaking) family. (The first book, for a child, that I thought of was Dr. Seuess's "Sneetches.")

I've now tried both GoodReads and LibraryThing. So far I prefer the latter simply because more of the books I have read are in the database. I also like being to choose the actual cover of the edition I've read. Of course it's not perfect. I disagree with how it handles the issue of dates of publication. I personally prefer to note the year in which the work was first published, not necessarily the edition which I read. Other people may not think this is particularly important. The downside with LibraryThing of course is that it is a pay site. I have not reached my 200 book limit (I only entered a few years of books). Once I reach 200 titles, then I would have to pay $25.00 to continue. I haven't decided whether I am willing to pay for that privilege. GoodReads is a very good site. I didn't know that I could block on the "friends", quizzes, etc. Many people would enjoy those aspects of the GR experience. This may sound strange, but I am not particularly interested in "rating" books. If I like a book, I will remember the experience of reading it. Only rarely do I force myself to finish a book I don't like.

I have a subscription to The New York Review of Books which comes out every two weeks. It's mostly book reviews, but usually has an article or two about politics (from a left wing perspective) or a museum show review. You can sample some of its content at the link below.

We subscribe to the Times Lit. Supp.. It can be a bit dry and boring - especially when compared with The Guardian (British Daily Newspaper) Saturday 'Review of Books' supplement, which is always very interesting. But Toad ca, you probably can't get it where you are.

I like the cryptic crossword in the Times Lit., however.

Actually, I just found that I can access The Guardian on-line, and their book section really is terrific! I'd prefer a paper copy, but will happily make do with the web version. Thanks for the suggestion.

I used to religiously read the NYT Book Review every Sunday, and go to the library with a list of the names I acquired. Stopped tho when I joined on-line book forums. My to-be-read list grew tremendously since then!

I never thought to look at the Guardian book section, thanks for the tip.

I used to read Library Journal when it came my way at work, but now that I'm no longer working, I pretty much rely on RP. I may look into Pages or Bookmarks. I don't know them. Well-written, idea- and character-driven genre fiction (SF, mystery, historical but not romance) is what I enjoy most. Only occasionally do I read novels described as literary, and most bestsellers disappoint me as being poorly written. Which of these publications is more likely to review books the kind of middlebrow novels I'd want to read?

I get the NY Times book review weekend supplement on-line. That's really all-except ideas from readers here at RP.

I know it doesn't really compare to the NYT Book Review supplement but every so often I used to read the Globe and Mail's Books supplement every Saturday. I did find one or two neat books from that supplement.
