Which book-oriented publications do you read?

I'm thinking of subscribing to the Times Literary Supplement (getting a free sample copy first ;-) ). And I was wondering which book and/or writing publications do you folks read? Which are worth taking a look at? Right now I only regularly read the book review sections from The Los Angeles Times and The New York Times.

I subscribe to Pages and Bookmarks. I'm not going to renew my subscription to Pages though but I really like Bookmarks. They review all the newer books out,tend to stay away from the lighter stuff and always do a feature piece on a well known author,alive or dead.

I subscribe to Pages and used to subscribe to Bookmarks as well. I let the Bookmarks subscription end because I liked Pages more. While Bookmarks had more information on the books it covered, Pages has more variety. Whenever I receive an issue of Pages it is like being a kid again and receiving the Sears Christmas catalog -- I want everything in it!

I also read The Washington Post's Book World section every Sunday.

This month my Book Club read: 1,000 White Women-The Journals of May Dodd by Jim Fergus I thought it was wonderful! I'm usually not a big fan of historical fiction, but this was great! Based on a true event, and then the author writes about what could have happened. Back in the 1850's the Cheyanne Indians wanted to increase their tribe numbers, so they asked the US govt to "trade" 1,000 white women for 1,000 horses. The US govt said no, but in the book, they agree. Very interesting idea. Characters were outstanding!! Written in journal form and quick read. Some language & violence esp at the end, but it's not too bad. Next month we read: Whistling in the Dark We read Water for Elephants at the beginning of the year and I thought it was okay. Normally would have never read about the circus. Others seemed to like it more then me. Read Life of Pi, but it took me about 3-4 times to get through it! Has anyone read Middlesex? I want to know if it's worth reading. Ii don't mind the topic, but it seemed really hard to get into? I've got my list made of all the books you guys have recommended. Teresa-who once had a dream about being locked in a library all night. (Wouldn't be so bad!)

Like some here, I learn skills best in an interactive situation where I observe, then try, then get corrections. But an instructor is not always available to me, and books work reasonably well when no teacher is available for the skills I want to acquire. And even when they are, books enhance and expand the learning experience for me. I prefer to have both, but will take either when that is all I can get. What have I learned? Gardening, cooking, quilting, sewing were all skills I learned to varying degrees from books, though certainly I have had some instruction, too, particularly with sewing and tailoring. I'm getting mentally prepared to learn to knit, and I think I want to take up playing the recorder. I don't play any musical instrument. Knowing that I would give up quickly if I don't get to a rewarding level fast I thought, why not the recorder? Children learn quickly to play it on a simple level, yet this instrument is capable of producing lovely music in the hands of a musician. And best of all, no one could ever ask you to sing along! How many books (and which ones) did you read last year?

I read about 2 or 3 books a week depending on the length of them. The only two I read on your list were The Girl on the Train and Orphan Train. I don't keep a list. I do want to read All the Light We Cannot See but don't want to pay that much for it on my Kindle. Our Library is 12 miles away and my eyes have trouble reading a regular book so the Kindle is perfect for me. Rosamunde Pilcher is my favorite author and some of her books were on special for the Kindle last week. I may break down and buy All the Light anyway. lol

Hi Carolyn - yes, I'd like to read the Stand, but as you say, it's been revised (as in - made much longer than it was). It's the old problem - the more popular an author, the less likely the editors will be prepared to say "Look, this is really a bit verbose - it needs to be cut down a bit...." Stephen King wanted to revise The Stand, and that's his prerogative - but I'd like to read the original version, not the new one. It's like DVD's and "director's cut" or "extended edition" versions. I want to see a DVD of the film as shown in cinemas - not some other longer version with scenes which, when you see them, you realize why they were edited out !

I have a subscription to The New York Review of Books which comes out every two weeks. It's mostly book reviews, but usually has an article or two about politics (from a left wing perspective) or a museum show review. You can sample some of its content at the link below.

We subscribe to the Times Lit. Supp.. It can be a bit dry and boring - especially when compared with The Guardian (British Daily Newspaper) Saturday 'Review of Books' supplement, which is always very interesting. But Toad ca, you probably can't get it where you are.

I like the cryptic crossword in the Times Lit., however.

Actually, I just found that I can access The Guardian on-line, and their book section really is terrific! I'd prefer a paper copy, but will happily make do with the web version. Thanks for the suggestion.

I used to religiously read the NYT Book Review every Sunday, and go to the library with a list of the names I acquired. Stopped tho when I joined on-line book forums. My to-be-read list grew tremendously since then!

I never thought to look at the Guardian book section, thanks for the tip.

I used to read Library Journal when it came my way at work, but now that I'm no longer working, I pretty much rely on RP. I may look into Pages or Bookmarks. I don't know them. Well-written, idea- and character-driven genre fiction (SF, mystery, historical but not romance) is what I enjoy most. Only occasionally do I read novels described as literary, and most bestsellers disappoint me as being poorly written. Which of these publications is more likely to review books the kind of middlebrow novels I'd want to read?

I get the NY Times book review weekend supplement on-line. That's really all-except ideas from readers here at RP.

I know it doesn't really compare to the NYT Book Review supplement but every so often I used to read the Globe and Mail's Books supplement every Saturday. I did find one or two neat books from that supplement.
