the person who sold you the rose WAS a salesperson. How did it grow? A shrub rose like Bonica does produce 'arching' stems but to produce a a really weepy standard you will need to select a spreading, rambling or climbing variety with lax growth. Traditional weeping standards are made with varieties such as Nozomi. If you know how (it's easy) you can bud your own weeping standards with new varieties such as Little Rambler, Open Arms or any of the 'Magic Carpet' ground cover roses.

Hi Felix, thanks for your interest in Bonica (rose). Last summer was its first flowering. The branches did hang, but not as long as I had expected, although it produced masses of blooms. Could you suggest the correct way of pruning it? please.

There is no mystery to pruning ANY rose.
Prune to remove all DEAD, DAMAGED or DISEASED wood then cut back depending on your reqirements - hard if you require blooms for exhibiting, less hard for a good garden display.
With weeping (rambler) standards also prune to shape the bush. DO NOT cut out all shoots that have flowered as they will flower again, simply cut back any side shoots as this will discourage weak flowerless growth from the ends of the side shoots.
If your variety is not naturally weeping the some training (wiring / tying) may be useful.
In my opinion the best weeping standards are made from the MOST vigourous varieties simply because it's better to remove wood if it grows too well than to hope for growth that may not come! Good luck with your Bonica

The head of my standard came off during a storm.The stem is dead. I had given up on the plant until I noticed a shoot at the base of the plant.
Can I train the plant to grow to a standard again? and how?
