Seafoam is good. I love it.
I also suggest you to go and ask some rose specialist to graft some standards just for you, so you won't be in the line to buy one more Iceberg :-) I'm kidding, because I like Icebergs, but for standards some other roses do a much better job. Seafoam is one of them.
I also saw Kathleen Harrop grafted as a 6ft standard. OMG -- it looks so hot!!
Well, that's what it takes -- just turn your imagination on and you can have any standard you want.

I have seen Sea Foam as a Weeping Standard is it beautiful.
I do not own one myself only a carpet rose, just imagine these blooms weeping down.

Crepuscule makes a magnificent weeper.

Many thanks for the replies - Seafoam was one of those I fancied from the Treloar catalogue so I shall proceed with it. I have crepuscule as a climber and in the house I currently have a vase with picked Crepuscule, Gold Bunny & Iceberg in it - the smell is heavenly.

Well I'm kinda set on getting seafoam. What eventually sold it was that it is scented. I get the feeling its not as abundant as iceberg *evil grin* but the patience may be rewarded. What does bother me is how tall does it get...do you add the height of the standard stem to the height of the bush and work it out from there or just trim it or...can you keep the demmed thing under control *smile*?

Nadia I would be more concerned with how much it weeps. It is a weeper so it won't get taller, it will trail down. If it likely to hang as much as crepuscule i would go for a 7ft standard so it doesn't drag on the ground.

Nadia, sorry to say, Sea Foam is not scented. It is very prickly also. Crepuscule is a far better bet IMHO&E.

Lozza, whilst I love Crepuscule, I want to place two weeping standards either side of a formal pool in a garden surrounded by formal hedges on 2 sides and a stone-like high wall on another. I felt white would be more in keeping than apricot. Would Heidersommer, Heideschnee or Diamant rate any better in your mind. One concern I do have with Seafoam is that Botanica's Pocket Roses does make a statement that Seafoam blooms cannot sustain bad weather conditions and is more suitable for warm climates with low rainfall. We have hot humid summers and reasonable rain (1000mm pa) and most of it falls in summer. I would appreciate hearing if anyone has experience with this.

Ooh ah. I really don't have any idea what I'm doing Lozza. Its supposed to have a scent but then, some descriptions are a little optimistic. I would have been rather disappointed I think.

What I'm looking for is a weeping standard and the space is roughly 3m square but I don't want anything so tall that it will shade out everything beyond that space. The idea is a horseshoe garden with a centrepiece garden bed surrounded by other roses outside of that 3m space. I thought the best bet would be a 90cm weeping standard of some sort. As a feature it would be nice to have something that will flower nicely and as pathways will be around it something that won't attack you while sitting on a garden bench. I would rather have to prune a lot then worry about reaching up high so perhaps the shorter height would suit me. Mabye I'm not looking for a weeping standard at all? Does anyone have any ideas on this?

You could well be correct Nadia. 90 cms does not make a weeper. If you want a feature, get a Std.Seduction, but don't let anything grow taller, else it will no longer be a feature. Go to 1.2M Iceberg for a good result. Weepers were meant to be on 1.8M understock. GENUINE weepers will grow maybe 30 cms higher than that, and trail long tendrils to the ground. The Wichuriana hybrids were used for this purpose, not repeat bloomers. The demand for repeat bloomers has caused some growers to put what are really shrubs on 1.5/1.8M stock. In the case of Iceberg, these end up looking like pins. Extending to the likes of Sea Foam, Crepuscule, is a partial remedy, but these are really shrubs, so what I have described as the "weeping" effect is lost. These cultivars want to grow up, not hang down. They are not as naturally lax as the Wichurianas. It's a bit like calling the procumbent shrubs "groundcovers". For genuine groundcovers, we need again the Wichurianas. Renae makes a good groundcover as does any rambling rose, such as Immensee, Weisse Immensee, Repandia, Heidekonigen, otherwise known as Partridge, Grouse, Pheasaant, and some forgotten name of a game bird.

I have tried Heideschnee and Heidesommer on standard. Not vigorous enough. Don't know Diamant. I regularly use Hybrid Musks on 1.5M sticks. Kathleen, Cornelia, Penelope, Buff Beauty. Still not weepers, but fragrant reliable repeaters. Renae makes a good weeper on 1.5M stocks. A problem for the public is that they see what is being mass produced and sold in the market place. Roses that sell themselves, like Iceberg, and Crepuscule. I never try and match these growers. With a little imagination, and dare I say experience, one can offer excellent alternatives, if the public only see our list. Hard to compete with the price-takers and the mass exposure of the chains. But we get by on quality and innovation.

I have seen photos of the most glorious 7ft standards of Crepuscule reaching right to the ground Lozza. That is what I am hoping for, for mine! I have given it plenty of room and very strong support, and hope it won't disappoint me :-)
Ken from Springpark Roses mentioned his desire to graft Suitor onto a tall standard and see what it does. He has a magnificent plant of it growing in a big old gum stump - never gets extra water, flowers all year, and always looks wonderful. It is the one I unfortunately didn't get from Misty Downs last year - was wrongly named and had light pink blooms :-(

Good luck Jan, the roses do it tough here, and where mine is is not ideal. Suitor I don't have. A Polyantha on a 7' stock is a tall order. Growing in a stump I imagine if I was a plant, would be pretty comfy, but seeking nutrients up a long stock might dent its enthusiasm. Personally, I love Marie Pavié on 90 cms. stock. Now there's a great rose.
