Hybrid Teas released 1921 - 1950

I'm trying to find information on Hybrid Teas bred and released from 1920's to 1950. Most of the books I've got hardly deal with these roses.

Does anyone know of any books, resources, leads that I can go to for some better research material? Info on breeders intentions, plant growth habits, parentage and growers' personal comments on these varieties will be fantastic.

I've got a book called Roses by Roger Phillips & Martyn Rix, part of the Pan Garden Plants Series (now published by MacMillan - I think.) There's a section on Early hybrid teas giving breeder, date and parentage. Hope that's helpful to you.

Again, ELISA, when properly done, is 100% effective, and has never once, in the 30-ish years we've used it, failed to give an accurate analysis. This is considering the following: 1. We always enclose "blind" samples of known infected and known uninfected tissue -- blind to the lab -- and unless the results come back with them correctly identifying all of those, we would not believe their results on our unknowns. That assures that virus titer is in a usable range on the day the test was done. In actual fact, in all those years, they (WSU Prosser's ELISA lab) have NEVER gotten one wrong, even once. Pretty good record. 2. Once that's done and a rose is "certified" clean (notice that ELISA is just one of the tripod of tests we run -- they're also tested with 'Mme. Butterfly' and 'Shirofugen' cherry -- all 3 must come out unambiguously clean) -- no rose once certified in that way has EVER later been found to have rose mosaic. Not one. Not ever. Not even in cold climates where all the intelligent people live. On rare occasions, the lab has said a test was somewhat ambiguous, and in those cases, we ignored all of the results from that run, and re-ran them later. 3. While we use the three tests for redundancy, we've never seen a case in which one test came out positive while the others came out negative -- in 100% of the roses I've ever tested, all three methods have agreed on their result. So obviously, the point of this long, drawn-out discussion with all kinds of complaints, is moot -- there is no problem here. We have no problem at all identifying where the disease is. No evidence to the contrary has been presented here. I would like to say that you can't argue with absolute 100% success, but obviously, there is one person who is determined to argue continuously with absolute 100% success! So yes, I'm just working our way toward the 150 posts mark, and hoping to keep us focused on the real issues, rather than being constantly drawn into perfectly silly little side arguments that are in and of themselves without merit.

Alright, logging in for once. Happy Birthday to me. laughs. If you are to ask anyone it is Kim. I'm Florida not California. No matter how much I love Ralph Moore roses I'll never have the expertise of Kim. I've tried 200 plus Ralph Moores in Florida have over 200 left. Best BY FAR for Florida - read "for me" - Have been the climbers he grew. But, that applies for growing in sandy soil of Florida. Morcrest was great 1-72-1 I couldn't ask for more. Green Ice is great in Florida. It is all different for me. The climbing minis and bractea have been great for me. I'd pay $ to touch base with Burling - she is the best. Preserve his roses. She doesn't ship to Fl. So, to the person that said I was famous today, talk to her and Kim! I'm just a stupid zone pusher. One day I hope to find a way to introduce my crosses. Kim and Burling have life experiences I could never touch. I have some poems. I've never met the man . I just do not want to see his roses go extinct. Alister Clark is another. Florinda Norman Thompson is a rose I've called all over the world looking for - The only info found so far has been .... Hi I see that all poster chose not to mention La France (Guillot 1867) as the first modern rose, and I could not resist doing that :-) Though this is undoubtedly a debatable subject it is this rose that historically has set the date for the modern roses. It was very quickly recognized by the breeder and others as something new different. It was the high centered bud and flower that made the shape of the modern rose. The ideal that this fashion made is still very much alive in the florist roses and in the hybrid teas in the garden. Though it was not so much the technical or botanical factors that initially formed the hybrid tea class as the shape of the flower. Of course the search for better repeat, flower seize, flower shape, winter hardiness also became important qualities of the hybrid tea. At the time of the introduction of La France there was all ready a class of roses, the hybrid perpetual, a group of roses that contained a very wide group of different types of hybrids. Hybrid Perpetuals are not at all as uniform as a class as the Hybrid Tea. Some of the could technically perhaps be classified as hybrid teas. I suppose some of the Austin roses could be placed among the hybrid perpetuals and some as a hybrid portlands, or even gallica and centifolia. Many of the Austin roses are thoroughly modern hybrids of roses like Aloha and other hybrid teas or floribundas. I think I would argue that Austin roses are closer to the hybrid tea than any other group. I consider the rose classification system as a man made theory placed on the roses and breeders that is not entirely the whole picture. It is sort of a instrument to organize the roses according botanical requirements, needs of rose societies, breeders, shows, historical, chronological, sellers and garden growers. There are roses introduced by breeders like Tantau, Kordes and Meilland that really doesn't go easily in to any classification. I suppose terms like "shrubs" is a kind of emergency solution where neither pure botanical or other classification really fits and the use in the garden has become a way to place them. There are quite a number of roses made my breeders like Tantau, Kordes, Meilland and others that in many ways are close to the Austin roses and neither really hybrid tea, floribunda or climber. In a way Austin roses or English roses as a group have much in common with the hybrid tea that it is constructed around an ideal of a flower shape more than any thing else.

Vintage Gardens has an excellent website and catalog for $10 that is one of the best resources I have ever seen. They have a huge selection and commentary on vintage hybrid teas and other classifications.

Hello Steve,
have a look to David AustinÂ´s : Shrubroses and ClimberÂ´s, there are some early HTs described. And look if this book was translated into English:
Alma de l`Aigle: Begegnung mit Rosen. DÃ¶lling und Galitz Verlag. hamburg. Germany.
It was written in the fifties and there are a lot of early HTÂ´s described.

Brent Dickerson, an 'old rose' author, is also interested in these roses. He refers to them as 'middle age' roses - you might ask him if he knows of any relevant printed material - his email is odinthor@csulb.edu, he also has a website, I can't type the whole address in for some reason (sorry) - but you can do a search on his name...

Another idea - go to Bookfinder.com, do a search on McFarland, Horace

He wrote a book in 1936 called Roses of the World in Color - I found a copy at a used book store, and bookfinder has a few also, not as detailed as the info you want, but great pictures and other books also listed - some of those old American Rose Annuals have lots of info on these roses.

You can probably get them shipped fairly inexspensively (I know I spelled that right???)

Andrea took my suggestion. I was fortunate enough to borrow the early American Rose Annuals from my public library's link to college libraries. They give you a good sense of the early Hybrid teas and people's favorites. They are an interesting read. Don't know where you could obtain them--but maybe a good botanical library at a university would be a start. Vintage Gardens also has the best selection of them on their website. That is where I got mine.

There is another book by Roger Phillips and Martyn Rix called 'The Quest for the Rose - The Most Highly Illustrated Historical Guide to Roses.' Their chapter on Modern Roses is about 50 pages long and encompasses hybrid teas and floribundas as well as paragraphs on important rose breeders. You may want to have a look in a library or book store - I have found it very useful and full of historical information accompanied by many photos which include shots of whole bushes, not just closeups of one flower.

I see there is a paperback edition from 1996 and Amazon is out of stock at the moment but you may find it in a library or 2nd hand bookstore. Here are the details of my hardcover copy from 1993:

Hi Steve, If you are ever near op shops or second hand book shops you can sometimes pick up old rose catalogues and books. It is amazing what you find in those places.
