A dear friend of mine is planning a trip to Cornwall and wants to read everything about it she can get her hands on. She has already read everything D. DuMaurier ever wrote, BTW. Any suggestions?

Jill Payton Walsh writes several which take place in Cornwall, including The Serpentine Cave and Goldengrove Unleaving. They are a bit hard to find, but worth the look.

There is the 'Poldark' series by Winston Graham, rather light and romantic. Made into a TV series some years ago; I think DVD's are still available.
I'll try and think of a few more.

Hi, Janet! We missed you in Chicago in July! You are going to LOVE the Lost Gardens of Heligan!!! We were there last year in early May (try to go later in the month if possible, as there will be more in bloom), but it was simply incredible. We also rented a car and drove around. I'll have to check through our trip notes and let you know some of the places we really enjoyed. Oh! You really should make the effort to get to St. Michael's Mt. You walk out when the tide is low and visit - the gardens fill the steep hillsides all around the castle, and are truly wonderful. Its not the "typical" garden, either...much like Heligan - very unique and nostalgic. Of course, there isn't much in England that ISN'T nostalgic! I love it all!! We also visited Trewithern Gardens. I believe I spelled that right, and would highly recommend that in the spring. The trees will all be in bloom, and the grounds are truly lovely. I'll let you know what else comes to mind. Are you interested in visiting any garden centers? We visited a couple that were fun.

My M-i-L watches the TV evangelists-one that she watches enjoyed the movie, becuase "it is all fiction-not one true word in the book or movie-it's a good story, that's all." Another one was highly offended by both the book and the movie. What I find interesting is that in the first book written about the main character, Angels and Demons, the Catholic Church is the innocent victim-in the DaVinci Code she is the perpretator of all nefarious deeds...Brown clearly just wanted to write thrillers, not necessarily attack the church. But we hear little mention of the first book. Mind you, it was as much a strain to the logic as the DVC...how he escapes so many death-assuring situations without super powers boggles the mind.

Astrokath, somehow your post slipped in stealthily between Annpan's and Carolyn's about their dads' gusto storytelling. It wasn't visible to me before today. It's a good thing that I like to reread threads or I would have missed your response entirely. 2004! Wow, it's been fourteen years since you began working at the bookshop. I remember when you first told us that you were considering taking the job, and all of us RPers told you to go for it. We thought it sounded great for you. We must have been right! :-) Kath, I like to associate books with particular people. I'm not sure why I recalled your Tess remark so vividly except it was amusing, although it was about a book I liked and you didn't. Of course I also link you with the Outlander books, the Morland Dynasty series (btw, I've read through the twentieth one; I think it's called The Winter Journey), and The Assassin's Cloak: An Anthology of the World's Greatest Diarists. The last one I frequently dip in and dip out. I remember now that you liked Leon Uris a lot. I often make note in my book logs who mentioned such-and-such books and authors. I also note who liked what or sometimes who didn't like something. I probably would see your name many times in my records.

I never finished The Rose Code after all. I was reading it with some interest until halfway through, then suddenly lost all interest whatsoever. I waited a couple of days and tried again, but no, no interest. (I did read the last chaper just to tidy it up in my mind, as after all I had a 50% investment.) Back to the library it went. Since then I have read finished the latest Murderbot book, Fugitive Telemetry. I enjoyed it as thoroughly as I did the five that came before it. Someone suggested to me that I read one of the author's fantasy novels, so I tried one. No, didn't work for me. It seems that I like this author's straight SF better than her fantasy. I also read my book club's latest selection, Best Seller by Susan May. I do not recommend it. Both main characters were without redeeming qualities; the prose was trite; and the ending so contrived that it left me outraged. Other than reading, I have busied myself with sewing and working in the garden. I tend to feel very lazy if I am not accomplishing things in all my activities.

Rosamond Pilcher wrote books set in Cornwall. I love her.

Mary, there is a newish book that has has good reviews (although I haven't read it) set in Cornwall Notes From an Exhibition by Patrick Gale. Now out in pb.
I don't know if your friend is interested in art but if she is a visit to St Ives should be a must. It has long had an association with artists and the sculptor Barbara Hepworth and potter Bernard Leach, brought there originally because of the pure quality of the light.
The Tate Art Gallery has opened its 'Cornish branch' in the town and would be worth a visit.
