Jardinera, thank you so much! When I drove in from work today and looked at that hedge I couldn't believe it grew in my yard. It gets more beautiful by the hour and it's nothing to do with me. For all of the pink porcelain and feminine look it has, it is really tough. It's one of those that will root anywhere you stick its cuttings, whatever time of year. Hi, S&S! You have been so encouraging, thank you. When you brought up my old thread I was in one of those places where I was upset with myself because I've made so many mistakes this year. I'm having some growing pains that result in learning valuable lessons but also make me feel badly and quite a bit inept. You must miss peonies, they are something special. I do have a lot of them but a lot of the same kinds. I usually buy a variety every fall from Van Engelen. I'll see what pictures I have so far. We are having a downpour tonight, not a good thing for pee-ownies. Thanks, Janet! Mel's Heritage is taking off and begging me to put him the ground. Red Cascade is doing fine, all three. Mrs. BR Cant and the Duchesse are still snuggled in their pots doing a little here and a little there. Thank you. Thank you, Sheila. We used to be able to post pictures to the ARF right from our Flickr accounts. But, of course, if you delete your photo storage account, any communication that might still exist between the two sites is lost! I still visit the "Antique Rose Forum" from time to time, esp. during the cold winter months when I need a pick me up. I don't post much any more. I do love my gardens and my roses and have had many triumphs as well as disasters over the past five years since I did these postings in 2013. Disaster 1: I now have numerous roses that are 15 feet tall/long. 20 feet tall. And even taller and even longer. And I now realize that, although the idea of giant roses seemed romantic when they were 3 feet tall, they have created a variety of problems in my garden and I am in the process of getting rid of all my monsters except a couple of my most favorite. Disaster 2: I have hundreds of roses. From almost every class. And I have lost track of what I have and what I have lost. Disaster 3: Invasive plants: Japanese anemones. Mexican primrose. Salvia. 4 o'clocks. Sweet violet. Blue globe flower. Black-eyed Susan. And even morning glory. I find poison ivy/oak sprouting in my pots, I invite you to imagine my garden plots. Disaster 4: Thrips. And, though, I love every single one of my roses, even those I am culling, I have found after growing so many, that above all, I love my David Austin roses most. Thanks all for your comments. I don't know what kind of brain trance I was in, Sherry. I always cut down the photo size, but didn't do it. Here is a shot from further away from the rose garden (It was half planted here) There are irises inside the first division bricks on the right, and daylilies inside the larger bricks next to it. There is a large iris bed, behind the knock out roses on the left. There are two more pretty large iris beds and Four large beds of daylilies. These beds are on the other side of the greenhouse. In the first picture, that is a butterfly garden across from the rose garden. I know, I know, but I work so I can garden. I suppose I need a 12 step program, but I don;t want to stop! kay

Bernik, I'm not familiar with the roses you plan to use, so can't say how they would look, depends so much on where you are most often viewing your roses from. But in general, I would plant by expected height and habit first, making sure you've left enough space between each. You could put lower-growing roses with perhaps a more trailing habit at the front of the walk, and taller ones at the back. If that's a fence border in front, you could consider a climber on either side. Color is too personal for advice. I like to have waves of similarly pale roses, waves of similarly orange to reddish to yellow to buff roses, with a few true pinks and deep magentas here and there. I work with a cottage garden style, where you might prefer a different look. Try not to worry about getting it perfect. Every rose grower looks at their garden and mentally moves roses about like furniture, because that Tchaikovsky would obviously be better on the other side of the porch, now that we see it's growth habit in maturity. But roses aren't furniture, and they don't take to being moved around much. Sometimes you end up with a bit of regret. Since you probably aren't putting them into the ground yet—we have to wait till late May/early June here in Asheville, so the ground is fully warmed up—you still have time to keep looking at rose photos online, making sure you know the color and habit of each rose, and mentally moving them around till you land on what feels right to you.
