Looking for book about Mormons

I read this book back in the 90's. It was written by a woman, I guess it was sort of an autobiography. She talked about being a Mormon and she eventually left the church (I think). She didn't describe the Mormon Church as being very good towards women. Can anyone tell me the name of this book? Thanks.

Yes, thank you, that was it. I just looked up the author's name and found out she killed herself in 2000. Sad.

I rely on a variety of sources. I prefer to read opinions from all walks of life, rather than limiting to a certain venue, group or class of people. For ideas on what to read, I visit bulletin boards, a few bloggers and reviewers, and rely on word-of-mouth. I try to save critical reviews for after I've read a book; then I'll look for newspaper and online reviews. I find it helps to get some perspective and context on the reviewer. So when I read Amazon reviews, I look at the other books that person has reviewed to get a sense of what that person's worldview or personal slant on things may be. I much prefer an open-ended dialogue with other readers than critical reviews, though. I'm not a student anymore. I'm just a middle-aged woman in search of a good book to read.

laticauda(OK - zone 7) I think I read somewhere that to make a room have clean air (not just cleaner air) it takes like 15-20 6-inch potted plants. For one room. If plants can make a room clean (not just cleaner) why United States Enviromental Protection Agency does not write about it at all? I too am LDS. I appreciate the thread, having not seen it before and the comments about the style etc. I know very little about style and architecture so it is really interesting to hear people talk about the different parts of the temple and explain what they are. One of my first thoughts about seeing the pictures is "this is a little different", but I really couldn't put my finger on much. The one big place I could was the material on the couches in the celestial room - generally the fabric is more subdued. They sometimes have a pattern, but more of a monotone pattern. The red, green and blue flowers stand out here knowing what many other rooms look like. The blue chair in the same room is really unusual. The carpet in the sealing room is different than I have seen in the more recent temples. It looks more like a quilt pattern. In most of the new temple I have been in they do a carpet carving. Usually longer lines in a design. It's hard to see it most pictures, but I love it in person. You can see a little bit in this picture: https://c7.staticflickr.com/7/6169/6182188974_d98477c6df.jpg I learned a little while ago that for many of the temple and man and his son come in and draw a line with a black sharpie and then cut out where the line was. Really quite a talent. Anyway, the Pennsylvania temple has quite a different look than the more sleek lines. ---- If they thought that they were going to be saved and I was going to burn in hell (and I'm sure they did), they never said so to my face. No, they didn't. lol out view of hell means that a person has to know they are doing wrong and do it anyway to get there. So if you are a basically good person in another church you won't make it to hell.

Oh I didn't know that - I saw her interviewed, I think on PBS, fascinating lady. Too bad

There is a more recent one, I need to check on it, again by a woman who grew up in the faith and left it. There is also Krakauers (of Into the Wild fame) Under the Banner of Heaven: Story of a violent faith. And there is a book coming out about the massacre in Nevada from the 1800s. Unfortunately all of these look negatively at the church, but I suspect those who look positively leave out a lot. I don't know anything that takes an even view. Lemme check with a friend who should know. Stay tuned

Carolyn Jessup wrote Escape, about her life in an LDS family. IIRC it was also polygamous, which means she was in a sect apart from the Mormon Church, as they no longer allow that. There are several other similar books, but this one looks like its been rated highly.

American Massacre: The Tragedy at Mountain Meadows, September 1857 by Sally Denton is the one I mentioned I remember hearing an interview with her at a reading in SLC (which was brave of her).

And now you have me thinking that I really need to find one that is even handed....

There is a National Public Radio program in the states called 'Speaking of Faith' moderated by Kristi Tippett, which recently did a program about the Mormon faith. It is highly possible the website of 'Speaking of Faith' would have a list of books that would be worth perusing on this subject. SOF has a very thorough website, and a an excellent archive, as well.
