Good question, yoyobon. There must be a word for that, but i don't know what it is.

yoyobon, it seems that there should be a special word for that sort of confusing relationship, but if there is I have been unable to find it quickly.

However, with the example of 'raze', I think it and 'raise' are simple homonyms, words that sound alike but are spelled differently and have different meanings. The confusion is mostly aural, not so much written. When written, because the spelling is different, it is pretty easy to figure out which is meant (if you know the meaning of 'raze'). But both words, when spoken, really need a phrase to further qualify them; such as: The building was razed with dynamite.
The building was raised to ten floors in just a week.

I have heard and read that some words (usually spelled the same, though) that seem to have contradictory meanings, are called "antagonyms." The best example I can think of at the moment:
cleave - to separate with a sharp instrument, and cleave - to cling together or to be faithful. I don't know if 'antagonym' is a dictionary-approved word with an approved definition. Two dictionaries that I checked do not list it; but if it's not real, it ought to be, in my opinion, because it certainly succinctly states the antagonism of meanings.

I'll vote for that. If it is not a word it most definitely ought to be. I'll also vote that Yoyobon's "raze" and "raise" ought to be included in the definition.

Antagonym, I found, is a word that can be used in opposite meanings.....here are some examples:

Cleave: To adhere tightly vs. To cut apart

Clip: to attach vs. to cut off

Cut: get in (as in line or queue) vs. get out (as in a school class)

I couldn't find examples of differently spelled words meaning the opposite. Now I'm really curious.

Following Phyllis' train of thought, one word with two opposite meanings is inflammable. When I was a child, I found this endlessly confusing. Today you don't hear "inflammable" used as often as flammable to mean "likely to catch fire". And thank goodness the phrase "not flammable" has replaced "inflammable" to mean just that.

And "emasculate" means similarly to "effeminate" :-)

There is, of course, homonyms. Words which sound alike, but are spelled differently: raze- raise; pear-pare-pair, but do not necessarily mean the opposite of what they sound like.

An "oxymoronic homonym" is the suggestion of a co-worker, a man with a true love of words as well as an inner (sometimes outer!) disgust at those who use them improperly. (And obviously, since he came up with this term, he makes a slightly better living at it than I do!)
