Growing Boab Trees?

Hi, I live in Derby WA. We have a Boab tree in our back yard that has dropped it's 'nuts' on the ground. I am wondering if i can grow a Boab tree from these nuts, and what i have to do with them?

HI Karen. I received some Baob seeds recently from one of our members and I was told to plant when fresh but the germinating rate is not the best. So I would have a go, maybe one of those seeds will sprout.....Cheers..MM.

Sadly, I received some seeds from another member and none of them struck, they need to be very fresh, I have since heard. I was lucky enough to find a wonderful 3foot high plant in a pot at the markets a few weeks ago. Hopefully it will grow and flourish here as they are wonderful trees. Give it a go, they should be fresh still. Marion

Maybe you should try the fruit and orchard forum. I don't know of any tree that is that fast to go to fruit, it takes at least a few years. Maybe some kind of berry like a strawberry? What about peppers or cherry tomatoes or beans? See if they have some better ideas over there. Also there are a few other edible type forums here you might scan through. Maybe you could call a company like Pinetree Seeds or Johnny's and see if they can recommend something. Also, some of these seed companies have days to harvest in their catalog. Radishes and lettuce grow very fast but I'm not sure how much kids will like a radish. At least they are colorful. There are colorful lettuces too. I grew crabapples with my kids once. We germinated the seeds in the refrigerator in a moist towel placed in a ziplock. It took 5 months just for the roots to show. After that, they only grow a few inches a year until they take. HJ, I'll post a picture of the boab flower when it is out but don't hold your breath as I've been waiting a couple of weeks now. Marion, I'm not really sure from the photo. I'll try and get a close up of the leaves in the next day or so, it is getting too dark now but probably won't be until Monday though. Mine is definitely a grevillea, one of the rainforest ones and I'm fairly sure it is baileyana. The leaves are bigger - longer and wider than buckinghamia and the backs of the leaves are slightly hairy with a goldy/bronze colour. Especially noticable in windy weather. According to my natives book there are another couple of rainforest grevilleas that have silvery/white backs.

Hi there I would be very interested if you still have some left - i have some guavas that are just ripening (they are delicious and germinate pretty easily), also some Queen Palm seeds (I know this one is borderline a problem plant - but its a really lovely palm - and if you take off most of the fruit before it ripens, then I figure it can spread). Hi to all:-) I was given a dried out fruit from a boab tree from Northern Western Australia by a friend who challenged me to get one to grow. Not know a thing about them or even researching I cleaned the seeds up really well by scraping all the chalky/powdery coating around the seeds with my nail. By memory I got around 10seeds and planted 6 straight away in normal potting mix around november in perth . Didn't think anything was going to happen as 6 weeks went past with no success and to my surprise all 6 came up. I had two pots with 3 in each pot and Two didn't survive after separating them and was left with 4. I kept what I thought was the best one and gave the rest away . They all died except mine which was going great with out any special care at all , just a little water every now and then. It's now coming up to one year old and a little under 20 cm high with the trunk base around 1.5 cm round. It lost all it's leaves quite some time ago and the branches have dried out a lot but the trunk still seems healthy and not completely dry like the top branches. Is this normal? At this stage there is no signs of new branches sprouting but the trunk seems to have some life . Has anyone had this problem? It was growing really well until it lost its leaves. Can any one help me on this? If it was to shoot some fresh leaves/ branches when could I expect this to maybe happen? Its in all pot around 20cm round and planning to bonsai it. Any info would be greatly appreciated . I'm quite confident it's not dead but unsure how there meant to look as I've only ever seen pictures of these huge amazing trees.:-)

I have had great success with boab seeds from nuts picked up in your area a year or two ago. The seeds have an incredibly tough coat that needs nicking. I found a 3 cornered file best. They don't appreciate Sydney winters but that's not something for you to worry about. Cheers L

Igrew some African Boabs from sed a few years ago, i guess propogation would be close to the same. I scarred the surface with a file, then dropped them in a cup of boiling howater and left them there overnight. From memory I had 1 seed out of 6 that did not germinate. Hope that helps. Dave.

we have a boab that we brought back with us from the kimberley & it's been doing really well, until just recently we noticed bugs on it. We took a leaf to the nursery & was told it had meelee bug & aphids on it, we were given a spray & were told it's because of the unusual humidity.At the moment the lower leaves are turning yellow & dropping off.Is it the time for the leaves to nfall off?

I picked up some boab nuts whilst in Broome in December. When I got back to Karratha I removed the seeds from one nut (about 40) and cleaned all the pith off. I planted 5 seeds and so far I have four growing. They took about 8 weeks before the first one sprouted and that is about 10 inches high . Two more came up a few weeks later and the last one has just shot .
