Growing Boab Trees?

Hi, I live in Derby WA. We have a Boab tree in our back yard that has dropped it's 'nuts' on the ground. I am wondering if i can grow a Boab tree from these nuts, and what i have to do with them?

HI Karen. I received some Baob seeds recently from one of our members and I was told to plant when fresh but the germinating rate is not the best. So I would have a go, maybe one of those seeds will sprout.....Cheers..MM.

Sadly, I received some seeds from another member and none of them struck, they need to be very fresh, I have since heard. I was lucky enough to find a wonderful 3foot high plant in a pot at the markets a few weeks ago. Hopefully it will grow and flourish here as they are wonderful trees. Give it a go, they should be fresh still. Marion

Hi there I would be very interested if you still have some left - i have some guavas that are just ripening (they are delicious and germinate pretty easily), also some Queen Palm seeds (I know this one is borderline a problem plant - but its a really lovely palm - and if you take off most of the fruit before it ripens, then I figure it can spread). I will also have some Bangalow Palm seeds coming along soon... Anyway, let me know if you're interested Cheers Mick

I have 3 peach trees. Contender which came grafted from a nursery, and two Indian Freestone peach trees. All 3 of my trees, I think are in their 4th year, this year. I had one peach last year -- just one on Contender. Here is a photo of one of the Indian Freestone trees from April 20. I grew the Indian Freestone trees from pits. By reputation they reproduce reliably, by seed. There is supposed to be enough genetic diversity that 2 such trees planted from seed near each other will cross-pollinate . . . Indian Free is one of the few peaches that requires a pollinator. The next one is Contender. The tree is more substantial as it was already grafted tree from a nursery planted in same year, but its flowers are not nearly as pretty. The fruit is good, though. I didn't see any honeybees this year. I see some fruit on the trees today less than the size of a pea, but some of the Indian Freestone buds are just dropping. I expect to get some fruit, just not nearly as many are setting as there were flowers. Less culling, but I'd rather cull fruit that are too plentiful than have sparse fruit.

Of course they slow with age and anything can happen. But so many times I have seen (and even experienced personally) how the enthusiasm for one specific cultivar can cause us to rationalize it's choice five ways from Sunday only to admit our errors ten years later. If there is only one lesson to be learned about gardening it would be to choose one specific cultivar for one specific area instead of falling in love with the idea of something and trying to talk ourselves into thinking it could work within our limitations. We somehow get attached to a convoluted vision of how we think a tree should behave and spend tons of energy convincing ourselves and everyone else how we will make it work, but often the trees have other ideas. That is such a prime focal point in your garden- you only have so many such spots and a light, delicate, airy small tree seems just the thing. I would only hope that you choose something that you can spend time sitting back and admiring in it's full glory rather than pruning and staking and attempting to bend it to your will for the rest of your life. Yes, you can "get all bonsai" on it and restrict it's growth my making pruning your primary hobby. But do realize that the growth restrictions achieved by bonsai techniques have as much, if not more, to do with root pruning as they do with trimming the canopy. Good luck. Please update us in 2026!

I have had great success with boab seeds from nuts picked up in your area a year or two ago. The seeds have an incredibly tough coat that needs nicking. I found a 3 cornered file best. They don't appreciate Sydney winters but that's not something for you to worry about. Cheers L

Igrew some African Boabs from sed a few years ago, i guess propogation would be close to the same. I scarred the surface with a file, then dropped them in a cup of boiling howater and left them there overnight. From memory I had 1 seed out of 6 that did not germinate. Hope that helps. Dave.

we have a boab that we brought back with us from the kimberley & it's been doing really well, until just recently we noticed bugs on it. We took a leaf to the nursery & was told it had meelee bug & aphids on it, we were given a spray & were told it's because of the unusual humidity.At the moment the lower leaves are turning yellow & dropping off.Is it the time for the leaves to nfall off?

I picked up some boab nuts whilst in Broome in December. When I got back to Karratha I removed the seeds from one nut (about 40) and cleaned all the pith off. I planted 5 seeds and so far I have four growing. They took about 8 weeks before the first one sprouted and that is about 10 inches high . Two more came up a few weeks later and the last one has just shot .
