W Australian eucs on the Qld coast

Has anyone tried growing some of the nicer eucs from Western Australia (salmonophloia, erythrocorys, campaspe etc etc) in the hot humid areas of Australia? I'd be interested to know which ones are reasonably reliable in normal garden conditions

by normal garden do you mean suburban garden say around 700 sq/mtrs?

the 'salmonophloia' is a forest tree and by my reckoning not suitable for the average garden as it would need to be app' 40 to 50 meters away from structures and utilities for safety.

and the 'campaspe' not sure i'd want it in my garden either as it grows to around 35 foot.

the rule of thumb with eucalypts is for safety they should be around the max height of the tree + 50% form any structures or overhead utilities, for me after living in rural i would want a 100% margin min'. there is also the duty of care to neighbours and others to consider.

and another rule of thumb small trees for small gardens.

Sorry about that, no I'm more interested in how well they perform on the Qld coast and not so much their ultimate size. Basically I'm interested in which ones do well there without any special attention being given to them. I would suspect that some may die out from diseases or the long hot humid spells that come with life on the coast. Some of the ornamental mallees I would think should make nice garden specimens if they could grow in your climate

Flyleft, that was one day, etched into my memory because my pt Dr Ben Vidgoff died that day and my husband and I got really bad pneumonia and almost died too. There was a lot of ice and snow and ferocious winds. Hasn't been like that since but have had 3 weeks of 11 degrees so we do have hard freezes. I've gotten my Eucalypti from Frank the Eucalyptus Man who lives in McMinneville but is back in Cincinnati for an extended stay helping his mom. Frank supplied Eucs to Pistils and Cistus Nurseries and who knows how many others. You could call Pistils and Cistus and see if they still have Eucs. We were super lucky to meet Frank at Cistus and he very kindly came and saw our crazy yard and has been carefully selecting Eucs from his hardy collection that he thinks will survive our conditions. Lynn wants another Camphora ... Frank come home! We have no inches left to plant anything else. Even the creeklets are stuffed with swamp trees. I wish more and more ppl planted Eucs here that could survive the heat of summer and freezes of winter -- have always loved Eucs, need more broadleaved evergreens around here. A lot of the native plants are starting to die because we no longer get enough rain and the summers are too dry and hot. Plus the developers are willy nilly cutting down anything left standing.

Took me a while to find this posting as well as bneing able to log in. Now almost 12 months later and I am in the suburbs of Far East Gippsland. Gradually making progress in what was a non gaRDEN. been here two years. Love those natives,but will take a few years to build up the stock. Always sticking cuttings in, some successes. Errinunda Rain forest = ferns, waratahs, not far away. Marvellous coastal heathland, lots of flowers in bloom and ground orchids in surrounding forests. LOve it.

Why take the risk? Macbirch, I understand exactly what you're saying. Planting natives does sometimes/often seem like a risk because we just don't have the collective knowledge about natives as we do exotics. About 2 years ago, I wanted to plant a hedge along the boundary between my native garden and my neighbour's property. I really liked the idea of using waratahs, but at that stage I'd never tried to grow one, and, since you don't see them around that much, thought they must be difficult. I decided not to take the risk and planted callistemons instead, at least they where natives. Anyway, I've since had great success growing 2 waratahs (even moved one), so I've decided to take out the callistemons, which aren't getting enough sun anyway, and replace them with waratahs. My point is that if I'd had the confidence in the first place, and got some decent advice from my local nursery, I wouldn't be now, 2 years down the track, going to all the work and expense of replacing the callistemons with what is afterall, a plant indigenous to the Blue Mountains! You'd think there'd be a waratah nursery here wouldn't you? No, I have to drive 40 minutes just to get to a native nusery, and that looks like it could close down any time soon. Waz, young people like you are the key. I hope you never grow exotics, never learn about them or decide you like them. Oh, and I hope you and Artie continue to be outspoken about people like me who grow roses. If I build another house and start a garden from scratch, things will be different.

Hello, I have a White Jacarandah tree that had 3 seed pods on it, they were fattenning up nicely.I went to a garden centre and asked them when do I pick them from the tree.She said wait till they go brown but dont wait till they open as the seed will fly away.But If I pick them too early the seeds won't develop inside so I must wait.I have looked at them every single day,now 1 of them has gone and I am on my hands and knees looking all through the garden almost crying.I was told I was so lucky to have a White Jacaranda tree that was not grafted and had seed pods.Should I pick the last 2 pods off before they disapear? Do birds take them? I didn't think it was windy enough to blow it away.The remaining 2 seed pods are still green but starting to look wrinkly,should I pick them now? I don't want to lose them too.I am putting pics up of the plump seed pod that has gone missing, a night time pic from 2008 of the tree and a day time pic lately.

I live in Brisbane and I have had some success with E. erythrocorys, E. phonecia and E. leucoxolyn (little euky hybrid). I also have a species which sold as "Summer Scentsation", E. oleacia (I think). They currently range in height from 1.5 - 3 metres. The oldest (phonecia) is about 3 years old. The erythrocorys have all been grown from seed. I did have a ficifolia but it couldn't take the humidity.

As for how well they do on the East coast, so far so good but the summers in Brisbane seem to have been drier than usual. I don't see any hint of any keeling over and the growth rates are still quite strong.

Thanks for the info. Was erythrocorys a good grower over there? Do you have many Callistemon over there?
