Syzygium Australe 'Sunset'

Hi All,

Bought two of these at Fitzroy Nurseries (Pink Lily, Rocky outskirts) yesterday, but cant find any info beyond a stock label entry at the Norwood site. As the plant didnt come with a printed label, I'd be keen to get any info I can on it.

For those with 'Supreme' or 'Elegance' cultivars, this is very much in that line : beautiful light-green foliage which contrasts nicely with the darker green of cultivars such as 'Aussie Southern'.

There is a whole swag of these Syzygiums listed in the Plant Breeders Rights website, with lots of info about many of them. Link below is their search page - just select Syzygium in scrolled list in first field and hit Search.

I've never heard of the various Yuruga plants, but the others are common in our nurseries.

Hi Liatris, I'll endeavour to take a decent photo of it this afternoon, although the next door neighbours weed collection may hinder my efforts to show the young plant off to its full advantage. In the meantime, take a look at my Syzygium Alamatoralum - it also lacks the darker green, ovoid leaves of the Australe varieties. In the background you can see another of my prized possessions, my Acmena Hemilampra. I havent had much luck with Acmena Smithii, and my Acmena Ingens struggled through summer, but the Hemilampra is doing very well indeed. The Rocky sun definitely sorts the real 'sun-lovers' from those bred for milder summers, and I suspect that many of these plants actually live in the understorey in their natural habitat, despite the tags and the assurances of the nursery industry. http://arthurjwatts.myphotoalbum.com/view_photo.php?set_albumName=album01&id=tinkling

I've planted Syzygium australe 'Orange Twist' along the western boundary fence. The area is in complete shade in winter and only receives brief overhead sun at this time of year. I really didn't hold out much hope, but just wanted to finish the garden by planting something. I've been surprised at how much the plants have grown, not just from the top but at the sides as well. Orange Twist probably wouldn't grow tall enough to replace the conifers but might be OK to block the new development. The label advises that the plant is suited to sun or part shade and gives the size as being 3 metres H x 1.5 metres W.

Hedging with Syzygium Australe Resilience

I have also recently planted 'Resilience' Syzygium, but also have growing as a hedge a few other varieties of the genus (Acmena, Syzygium). I've found that 'tip-pruning' as the plant grows produces the best results; that is, as the growing tips elongate, especially over spring, nip off the young tips back to a lower bud - back a node or two. This will encourage branching, which, to produce a bushy hedge, is what you're after. 'Resilience' really is mostly, though perhaps not totally, free of psyllid attack (psyllids cause an ugly blistering of the leaves, especially on S. Australe varieties). Resilient, but perhaps not totally free, though I haven't seen any effect on mine, just keep an eye on the new growth. Also, if you're growing them as a hedge, as they mature taper your pruning, that is slightly slant the hedge; narrow at the top, broad at the bottom. This allows the lower section of the bushes to receive some sunlight. Without it they might suffer leaving an ugly, dying, lower section. Good luck with it.
