growing rainbow eucalyptus froms seed

Has anyone grown rainbow eucalyptus (E. Deglupta) from seed? How long does germination take? Any other info would be appreciated. Thanks

"I hope we can still get that cool rainbow look but I'm really just happy I'm getting any growth at all right now." Not in Virginia Beach but it's impressive, surprising even, that it managed to return from the roots. Where did your gift giver get it - or did you ask? I think they are pretty rare in commerce. "We have a lot of crepe mertles here that people cut back and the tree regrows its branches back, would a eucalyptus do the same?" It would but it's a bad idea, especially for crape myrtle. Google "crape murder" - I believe there used to be a website.

Came here during some research I'm trying to do on this subject because of some potential plans I have on planting one of a few eucalyptus species, and while there's a lot of good information/discourse here on variables concerning affected plants, mulch quality, effect on soil, and other factors that may affect plants such as water and root competition, I'm kind of noticing a pattern here and elsewhere: There's a lot of lumping eucalyptus into one umbrella category...Guys, there's like 700 something species in this genus; they are not all created equal. I think that also may be partially why there seems to be so much debate over the subject, two different people could be very well talking about two different species. I'm not saying everyone has to be a friggin botanist over it, but it really is helpful to know what species any given person is talking about. Maybe then we can start to notice a pattern with one given variety or another. Just my two cents. As an aside, I kind of think climate may have a non negligible part to play. I could definitely see these chemicals hanging around in the soil a lot differently in a more arid environment with lots of organic matter build up versus a wet rainy tropical environment where everything either leaches away or decays as fast as you can blink at it.

Fortunately there isn't any plumbing there. The raised bed it is in has a creeklet running at the foot of the cottage stones so if its roots go down about one foot it will hit water. It really likes water. I measured some branchlets from yesterday to today and it grew 6" yesterday. This tree is beserkly happy. We sponge-painted the house 8 different colors and used metallic car paint, 2 colors, to vein the house like lightning/rain. The veins sparkle and glitter in the sun. We planted Lee's Dark Purple Rhodies all along the house in raised beds, so the trim color is the exact color of the rhody blooms and a bunch of other flowers here. Basically we painted the house to match the jungle the yard will be in a few years, so the house will blend in and "disappear." Hope the foundation will be OK. It's a big concrete slab with a manufactured house on it. There's so much great dirt and water in the yard I'm hoping the roots will seek that out rather than under the foundation. Who knows exactly which Euc it is. Frank the Eucalyptus Man has some doubts whether it's really a subcrenulata. I just want it to be happy. Here's a picture of this Euc May 12 of this spring, just a little baby. It's now way over the roof, have to prime and paint some hooks and bungee it to the eves because it flops over when the sprinkler water weighs it down. Everything's grown so much, roots finally taking hold a bit. Very excited about next spring. Hope this winter is mild and next spring very wet. More rain in the summer sure would be helpful. Lucky Washington State got rain this summer!

Actually, in the years which have gone by, we've lost most of them. We had one last year which turned into a beautiful tree over twelve feet tall, which we used for dried floral arrangements after the first frost (the leaves dry perfectly in place), but it didn't come back this year. We still have two small ones, even though we've had them growing for three years. The winters try to kill them, but they continue to spring from what's left. If you're willing to keep planting and not get frustrated, they will grow sometimes for several seasons. I'd give it a shot, unless it's a particularly treasured plant. We have slightly warmer winters down here than you tend to only ninety miles north. You could also try covering it with something light--which I wanted to try but never did.

Boland & al., 'Eucalyptus Seed' (CSIRO 1980) recommend for this species (based on their testing) a temperature of 35 deg C and a medium of pure vermiculite. They recorded first germination at 5 days, continuing up to 14 days.

This is the Eucalyptus sp. occurring closest to the equator, in northern PNG and southern Philippines, but not in Australia.

I propagate hundreds of Eucs from seed every year for taxonomic purposes but always from Southern Australia not from the north. I am not familiar with this particular species but Eucalyptus seeds can easily be separated from the chaff (other stuff which falls out of the ripe and dry fruit). Every time I go to a supermarket I buy a tea strainer. Each brand and type has a slightly different sieve size. I now have a good collection and usually there is one which will particularly suit each species because seed size varies greatly. With subgenus monocalyptus, I don't bother. I germinate the seeds in trays and transplant to empty milk cartons (filled with soil of course) after the third or fouth set of seedling leaves has formed. Of course you can plant the chaff as well but I strain the seed to get a good idea of the viability. Eucs prefer to be planted only a few mm below the surface. The raising mix I use is sand and clay and the only fertiliser is a bit of ash from the fire roughly a tea spoon of ash per kilo of soil. Any other fertiliser at all will usually kill them or prevent germination. When propagating a new species I make one end of the tray slightly acidic (rotting sawdust) and the other end alkaline (lime sand) with a plastic separator. The end of the tray which does best tells me what to use next year. It also tells me the best acidity of the soil to which I will transplant them and the best place to plant them when they are about a year old.

Its an easy but very rewarding task. I hope this is of some help.
