Poinciana Tree native to south africa everyone growns them up here. I think they are pretty, but messy as in drop flowers and leaves and have very long root structure that run in evry direction. Do a google I don't know if they would like the cold that much and they get really big theirs also a purple flowered one (jacaranda) I think that getrs even bigger..

the poinciana tree is also recognised up here as the flame tree. when in full flower there is hardly any leaves just a bloom of orange to red flowers that cover the entire tree. yet at times of no flower the same tree will have very little leaves with seed pods hanging down, very unatractive at this stage and more or less lifeless, something you would expect out of a scary movie in a graveyard scene.
i would say to plant the seeds in a well air rated, mulched soil just beneath the surface. it is a tropical tree so i dont know how you'll go but it is worth a try. they are nearly classified as a weed at the east point coastal rainforest reserve up here in darwin.

I hate to be the one that says it after my efforts with fishtail/foxtail palms and my variegated bamboo type thingy, but the two trees described by Darwin_NT and stillmanz don't sound like the two varieties of red flowered trees with large brown pods that grow within cooee of my place (sunshine coast). here's a photo of the one that I think rlme is describing - is this the one rlme? and the other tree mentioned seems to be the "flametree" that mistymorn described in one of her posts. To me the leaves are similar but the flowers are quite different.

yep, thats it :) I have a tree flowering at the moment that produces pods but they are green; inside the pods are bigger, green seeds. This tree produces yellow/red flowers and also has chickpea like leaves typical of the legumous type of tree. Anyone sure of the name? I'll try to get a pic up in the next week. It is not a moreton bay fig, but I think contains moreton in its name

Paradisi, do the blooms on your two trees resemble those shown in the URL below? If so, your trees are not poicianas but pink-flowering cultivars of Caesalpinias (C. pulcherrima), as mistymorn said. Problem is, this is described as a dwarf poinciana growing to about 6-15 feet tall and as wide. Yours looks bigger, though?

Paradisi that looks like a common poinciana (just a small one) to me. I assure you my description is correct, it will get bigger and it will drop its flowers and pods everywhere and its root system will have spred in every direction searching for a water pipe or similiar. They are pretty trees its just people seem to forget how big they grow and put them in inapropriate places they will out grow, you have to keep them shaped or they can get out of hand.

If it has Moreton in its name, could it be Moreton Bay Chestnut. That has big seeds and red flowers.

cestrum sorry I'm so late replying - unsure about the flowers they've all gone. that one I photographed is only a baby - theres one in my street that has a spread at least twice as wide - though it is a little bit shorter than the photographed one. they are a wonderful tree - a great show and great shade

Moreton bay chestnut has round pea like pods (but bigger) and the poinciana has a flat pod .

I have a Poinciana tree growing in a large ceramic pot and it is now about 1 and a half metres in height with a strong trunk. It is very thick and green and I have to water it every day, but it is very pretty. Will it survive in the pot this way do you think? I am next to the Indian Ocean but it doesn't seem to mind the salt. Will it ever flower in the pot do you think also?
