Growing Hakea

Hi,

I'm currently completing a diploma in horticulture and as part of an assignment I'm investigating commercial propagation methods of Australian native species, in particular that of the Hakea genus.

Details include:

Propagation methods, management, maintenance, material, etc.

If anyone is able to assist with any information or can direct me further it would be greatly appreciated.

Have a look at direct sowing of native seed into tubes, for starters. This is the most common form of native propagation for native protaceae.

If you're in Melbourne, a friend of mine raves about the library at Burnley College.

Rainforest plants last longer than wattles, and I think you'd be able to grow them there. Get ones labelled "drought-hardy", as they have deeper roots which don't annoy, the way the roots of the plants of moister rainforests can. The drought hardy rainforest species grow naturally in dry rainforests, and tend not to be as tall as those from moist rainforests. As a type, they tend to be more suited to gardens. Hollywood - Pittosporum rhombifolium or Auranticarpa rhombifolia - would be about perfect. It's very dense, about 2m across and 5m high, with foliage almost to the ground if it's grown in the open. It makes a good, quick hedge if planted at 2m intervals. Some of the lillypillies would also do well - I'd suggest Acmena smithii, which has similar density and form to the hollywood. Trish

Trying to grow a native from seed

Hey Roughie. The thing with growing any Proteas from seed including Hakeas is that the seeds need to be in darkness to germinate. Put your seeds in a tray of propagation mix and then put just enough prop mix over the top of them to block out the light, don't bother with vermiculite. In my experience with growing Proteas from seed I have learned that they are very fickle with thier germination times. Some species will come up within a few weeks while others take much longer. I happened on four seeds of Hakea lissosperma (Needle Bush) while working on a herbarium and I thought what the heck, I'll give em a go. After months of care nothing happened then the growing season finished and they got months of neglect to the point of drying out completely. I didn't bother to take the tray out of my little Chickenfeed greenhouse I just pushed it to the back while I started off lots of other new seeds. 14 months after putting the Hakea seeds in one decided to pop up and is now growing like a rocket! That's a nice looking Hakea. We only have the one species here, a white one. Plants from the southern coast of WA are better adapted to wetter and heavier soils than those from further inland and along the west coast. It's very much a maritime climate and quite wet for a lot of the year.

As far as extracting the seed from the hard capsules...

If you roast Banksia cones on the grill of a gas fired BBQ the individual capsules will open up quickly.

This would most likely also work on Hakea although I have not tried it myself.

Place the seed capsules, oldest from the plant which means getting right into the bush to get those closest to the trunk, into a paper bag and leave in the car. The heat in the car doesn't take long to open the capsules. Each seed has a papery wing. 2 seeds per capsule. The capsules will generally open without this treatment but take a bit longer. Direct sowing into individual pots is viable. Best time of year is early autumn, but spring is ok also.
