"6 to 8 feet" isn't really a tree. Hi Anna, I was wondering which part of Australia you are planning to start out in, it might be worthwhile posting this so that people in that area could give you some ideas about places to check out. Other than the botanic gardens in canberra, the other botanic gardens I have visited here have dissappointed me with their limited displays of natives. I prefer to just get out in the bush, that way you can see things unique to the area you are in, and get the opportunity to see birds, animals, butterflies and insects as well. Good Luck wwoofing too. I had a great time wwoofing in Denmark. BTW, for others interested in experiencing wwoofing, you don't need to be an overseas visitor to go wwoofing, anyone can do it, pretty much anywhere. cheers, mudlark

Hi Aggie, I think I've mentioned it several times - moved into my new home in mid-June, and I've been planting solidly since (!). My biggest mistake was to place too much faith in the huge Poincianas at the back of the block - the angle of the Winter/Spring sun and the semi-deciduous nature of Delonix has left me with some pretty sorry tree ferns, and my mature palms (2m plus) have all suffered with wind and sun damage, but they seem to be coping. Its not all natives - I've been seduced by a lot of exotic tropical plants - but I've tried to plant natives where possible. Carpenteria, Macarthur, Solitaire and Bangalow palms over an understorey of lillipillies, cordylines, ferns and a mishmash of Austromyrtus, Backhousia, Nandina and other species, with Lomandra, Emu Bush and Liriope at the bottom. Perhaps you could have a trip to Mount Annas(Correct Name?) which I beleive has native plants from all over and discover what they do with the WA natives. I thought Kangaroo paw like it a bit damp and sandy. We had a man from Strathmerton,Vic.speak at APS the other night who ripped up his clay fairly deeply, mulched, hilled and swailed, and had good results. Yes it has to do with microclimate and soil . Research to learn about the plants' natural habitat. After all some WA plants do not grow in sand. Don Burke has a good native garden. But Mount Annas National gardens would be your best bet.
