Alloxylon Flammeum

I see from a previous post in 2008 that I am following the same path as another person that has posted...

I am in Florida - Tampa area, and have tried some Australian plants (Banksias, Grevilleas, Hakea, Eucalyptus and Protea) with some limited but exciting nonetheless success.

I am searching for a plant source for Alloxylon Flammeum but as stated in the previous post is very difficult to find here. I am trying some seeds but I heard these are slow growing so I'd like to find a plant to start with.

I have tried most of the well-known Australian/tropical plant suppliers that I know in the US but without success. Does anyone have any suggestions/leads?

Some Australian proteacea do grow slowly - and take many years to flower. As to whether a seedling-grown or a cutting-grown flowers any quicker, I have no actual experience but I think either way you could be waiting many years for flowers.
Anyway, your access to local info is probably better than ours, unless you want to throw yourself on the mercy of one of the Australian Native Plant organisation

and see if someone has a contact to another nursery, or a botanical garden or private garden who might give you a start.
I guess the only alternatives, are to try to directly import a plant either mail order, or through someone you know who's travelling to Australia, picking one up and bringing it back as luggage.
There are bound to be Australian Nurseries with the set-up to export overseas, but the cost to do so for one plant, could put it out of your reach since what-ever method of transportation or arrival condition your quarantine required (eg bare-rooted) would involve express couriers.
Same goes for the alternative, really. You would presumably need an import licence at your end, and a phyto certificate at least from this end.

They may be able to provide a list of australian nurseries who export, and that might narrow down your search

he can tell you what requirements there are for exporting the alloxylon........ good luck !

Hi Alison, Good to hear from you. I actually do have a Greyia sutherlandii now, but thank you so much for the offer. Interesting you posting at this time. I gave one of your Caesalpinia peltophoroides seedlings to one of the guys from the Jungle (Peter) and now he's looking for seeds for a nursery friend. I have two left--one is still in a pot and the other I planted out in April. I also have two seedlings of the Tabebuia roseo-alba from the seeds you sent me. I'm going to plant one of those out in the Spring too. If you run into Grant...tell him that I got ONE seed of Deplanchea tetraphylla to germinate and that plant is now about two feet tall. I'll be putting that in the ground next Spring too. I want to thank you both for your generosity. I found a seed source of Alloxylon flammeum on eBay OZ and I'm going to try that next Spring. I've also got a little Buckinghamia celsissima growing and thriving in the ground. Many different kinds of Australian natives do very well here in SoCal. -Ron-

Thanks for the replies. It seems eucalyptus grafting is more hush hush than fight club. Looks like we'll be going with a grafted C. ficifolia but I have started growing a few E. deglupta and E. gregsoniana from seed just from curiosity. Out of 100 seeds, I have four deglupta seedlings coming along and 60 out of 100 gregsoniana shooting up. I understand Sydney and Melbourne botanical garden's troubles. I'll have to check out the Alloxylon flammeum. Sounds familiar.

Hi Phil, The information that you require is about Alloxylon flameum (Note name change), Tree Waratah. I found the information on the Website listed below. It says that they will tolerate moderate frost. In one of my reference books it states that a plant is said to be frost tolerant if it copes with temperatures to -7C. The reason Alloxylon seed is not available may be in part due to it losing viability quickly if not kept in the fridge.
