Has any one transplanted waratahs I have put a couple in the wrong spot Also I have one in a pot I want to put in the ground Any advice They are only small ones

Apparently not Laurie. I need to move one too and was hoping for some advice. I've moved heaps of exotic plants, in fact, some have probably spent more time in the wheelbarrow than they have in the ground. I'm not so confident about natives though, as I just don't have the same amount of experience.
I look at is this way, if a plant can't stay where it is you've lost it anyway, so if you move it and it dies, you're not really any worse off. I'm going to wait until my waratah has finished flowering, prune it back and move it on a cool day. I will then keep it moist for a few weeks and give it several applications of seasol.

Warratas are extremely difficult in horticulture. to be successful, you will need perfect drainage to one metre, the soil can be sandy, extremely dry and must be low in Phosphorus, never fertilise Telopia species with Phosphorous, Warratas develop deep roots, they spend much of the first few years after germination sending a tap root directly down, they do this as they commonly grow over water, the water is normally one or more metre below the soil surface, a good way to establish Telopia Speciosissima is to obtain a seedling or start your own from seed, and for the first two years at an intervals of about 4 weeks apply a systemic fungicide such as "Fongarid" to the plant, Telopia species suffer from phytophthora, they succumb readily in horticulture, if your garden is not suited to the species, you may have better luck growing them in pots.

California. In the 1850s Eucalyptus trees were introduced to California by Australians travelling to California during the California Gold Rush. Much of California has a similar climate to parts of Australia. By the early 1900s thousands of acres of eucalypts were planted with the encouragement of the state government. It was hoped that they would provide a renewable source of timber for construction and furniture making. They went on to note that the promise of eucalyptus in California was based on the old virgin forests of Australia. This was a mistake as the young trees being harvested in California could not compare in quality to the centuries-old eucalyptus timber of Australia. It reacted differently to harvest. The older trees didn't split or warp as the infant California crop did. There was a vast difference between the two, and this would doom the California eucalyptus industry.[11] One way in which the eucalyptus, mainly the blue gum E. globulus, proved valuable in California was in providing windbreaks for highways, orange groves, and other farms in the mostly treeless central part of the state. They are also admired as shade and ornamental trees in many cities and gardens. Eucalyptus forests in California have been criticised because they compete with native plants and do not support native animals. Fire is also a problem. The 1991 Oakland Hills firestorm which destroyed almost 3,000 homes and killed 25 people was partly fueled by large numbers of eucalypts in the area close to the houses.[12] In some parts of California eucalypt forests are being removed and native trees and plants restored. Individuals have also illegally destroyed some trees and are suspected of introducing insect pests from Australia which attack the trees.[13]

There is a white and a yellow, naturally occurring, variety of the Tasmanian waratah. Please read the link. I grow the red one down here in Tas. The Tas. waratah is not a whole lot like Alloxylon flammeum except maybe in flower form... but only a little. Tallest I have seen growing was in Cradle Mountain near where I live outside one of the chalets and was probably about 5m tall and about as wide. I have some seedlings growing now from this bush... very slow (or maybe just erratic) to germinate... If you get some seed sow them in autumn but leave the pot undisturbed for over a year. I planted mine last autumn and am still getting germinations now a year later. Here is a link that might be useful: Telopea truncata

Your title is very misleading...for a moment I thought "oh fantastic, more b****y Aussie pests to deal with!" While you are writting your letter of complaint, I suggest you add Germany, Israel, USA and South Africa and South America to your list as these countries are also "claiming natives as their own". Here are are a few interesting statistics to add to your unfounded complaints: - Israel grows and exports 14 miliion Kangaroo Paws annually compared to Australias 4.5 million. - More Emus are farmed in USA than in Australia. - Australia provides less than 2% of the worlds industrial supply of Eucalyptus oil. Should I list more? I found these statistics and many more, listed in article after article brought up by a quick google search. I view your post as scare mongering and I suggest you research such future claims carefully before posting as you did. If you had, you would have found that it is not the waratah species as a whole, more like 1 or 2 varieties, and, it's not been claimed as a native. It's what you do when you produce a new variety, you give it a name and put a patent on it. Get with it, but if you're this upset and willing to waste time over 1 or 2 varieties being patented, I guess the whole world had better get ready for a huge backlash over lost profits from countries growing and improving foreign plants. The tomato, apple, rose, hmmm, oh yeah, Rododendron, camellia, citrus...they are just a few of many common plants that have been "taken" from their native countries. I'd be interested in seeing what response you get from your government.

I've never tried moving waratahs but did try a small grevillea once. It had only been planted for a couple of months but had to be moved because of unexpected earthworks.

The plant didn't survive. Apparently many natives don't like their roots disturbed at all. If you had to move it try and take as much soil with it as you can.

I'm not sure about pruning it back first though. When I learnt about horticulture years ago, we were told to prune back the plant but a few years ago I read somewhere that the latest research shows that plants draw food reserves from the leaves to replace any roots that were lost, so pruning the plant is depriving it of food. I don't know if this has since been found true or not. Someone else may know.

Also some natives can resent pruning. If you want to prune, maybe just a light trimming? Keep it watered but don't overdo it as they don't like sitting in water. If the weather is hot, maybe shade it with temporary shadecloth shelter.

If you move it let us know how the plant goes.

I have moved one young plant the real problem with telopea is they hate to be stressed full stop.
the one in the pot will go into the ground no worries standard practice applies with that but if you are goin to move them I would make it snappy as they start to delevop whether to flower or continue to grow leaves
I would be looking at preparnig the site where there going to be moved and then dig up around double the area you would normally dig for transplanting as to have minimal root disturbance and then water well for a couple of weeks with dilute seasol
waratahs hate wet feet they prefer water running over the roots then sitting on it so make sure you have free draining soil or they will keel over anyway

Hello Laurie,

Previous advice on this forum has been that Proteaceae species,which include Waratah, Grevillea, Hakea, and Banksia, have sensitive roots that resent disturbance.

I don't think the same problem applies to all other species of native plants. I have successfully transplanted the odd plant - the last one was an Eremophila.

If you do transplant Proteacea try to minimise root disturbance on the digging out stage, and then immediately give the roots a light all over pruning UNDER WATER - try in a bucket or laundry sink. It is apprently the intake of air into the damaged roots that spell doom for them, and by doing the trimming under water they take up moisture instead and should make it through. I have tried it with pot bound Grevilleas and it has worked for me - could be worth having a crack at the Telopea if you really have to move it.

Thank you for all the advice I will have a go wit one It is not doing much where it is . I had a go a coulpe of months ago with a Christmas bush an it has survived Laurie
