Waratah dying

Hi,

I planted two waratah plants over 12months ago. They seemed to be stagnant in Winter and began shooting new growth late spring. One plant has since died and when I pulled it out, had very little roots. The other one has lost two of the three branches (yellowing leaves, then turned red) and I fear it is going to die to. I think it could be some sort of root grub, and I could apply Clorpyriphos to kill them, but I am afraid it will kill the plant to. Would like some advice...at this point I am trying to stop the inevitable, so will try anything.
