Stuck inside the cliché box

If read the phrase "think outside the box" one more time, I'm going to break something. I hope the writer is within reach. I react the same with sports metaphors (touch bases with), b-school buzzwords (excellence, QC), and manipulative commercial speech (townhome, organic, rich). I bought a new hardback about Russia by a well-known journalist that was dripping with clichés. When I encountered "till the cows come home," I'd had enough; I stopped reading and disposed of the book.

Does anyone remember the geometric puzzle that "think outside the box" originated from? I encountered it in junior high which would have been forty years ago.
