Yes, I figured the bottom would get bare as it matured. At the moment, there just aren't that many canes, and the ones which are there are singleton long canes (~8-10ft) without that many laterals on them, even though I've bent them down and tied them out along the fence. Again, this may just be how they grow until they're mature, maybe they need the extra sunlight they'll get once they're a little taller, or maybe I just need to feed them more - hence why I'm trying to figure out if this is a pruning matter, or if it's something else that will make them happy :) Thanks for the reply!

Your rosemary is probably doing what it should be doing for its type. Read on to find out what types to buy and how to grow, prune, etc. Btw, I have both the upright and prostrate forms and I recently cut both way back to encourage new growth. You actually have to take into account a bunch of different things. I don't grow pumpkins personally but we had them in the garden when I was a kid and with a good grow we could get about 12 but it required that my family really keep up on the nutrients, watering, things like that. They weren't huge pumpkins or anything but we considered it a nice little harvest! Here's a lot more information than I ever needed to know about pumpkins but you might find it helpful. :)

Garden inoculants are often sold in combinations to cover the most commonly-grown species. I realize time may be a factor, but if you are unable to find inoculant locally, a couple mail-order sources are linked below. True-leaf market inoculant Johnny's inoculant True Leaf shipped an order to me in 4 days; Johnny's is experiencing delays. There are other sources too, which might be nearer, depending upon your location. "Plants need not only nitrogen in a soluble form to grow. They need other nutrients as well. I believe there are not much nutrients in sand." Which goes without saying. The fact that sand is almost empty of nutrients means that liquid feeding would be required. It also means that the grower has absolute control over what nutrients are - or are not - being added. I suggested sand because nodules can be broken loose if handled roughly (especially with beans) and sand is easy to rinse off with minimal damage to root structure. I have performed this experiment myself both with sand, and with soil-less seed starter. For extensive root systems, the sand is much easier to remove.
