Hi Frank, I have grown this plant many times from seed. If planted in good soil and the right water level you could see flower by the 2nd or 3rd year. This species tends to grow tall and sparse which leads to less flower than the normal frangipani. It is much better planted in a rainforest situation where it can grow up above the smaller species rather than out on its own.
Hi. I'm in Southern Victoria and planted a Hymenosporum flavum about 7 years ago. Wanting to grow a couple from seed, what is the best month to to start? It was already a metre or so tall. It coped with the drought and is doing much better since it ended. This year is the only the second time it has produced a lot of seed pods that made it to the stage of going brown and opening up.
I picked off 4 pods full of seeds this week and have an idea how to germinate them. But does anyone know the best time of year to put the seeds in the soil to germinate?
I had trouble with some other young things - cuttings in pots - during winter because it is so cold and frosty and all sides of small property get a lot of shade. Thanks Ingrid
Hi Ingrid, Usually when the seeds are ready is the best time of year to sow them. Plants will produce their pods/fruit etc, and can vary when the seeds are ready to suit the conditions they're in. (Within a month or so). As Hymenosporum flavum tent to ripen around Dec/Jan, I would sow them 2 weeks after they open. Leave the seeds in cool dry area( on newspaper and out of direct sunlight ) for the 2 weeks prior to planting. They can be stored and planted at a latter stage too. I would avoid the colder times for germination unless you have a heated igloo or hothouse. Hope this was of help. Happy planting. Thanks Aaron.
Hi Aaron. Thanks for your reply I appreciate that. I'll put the seeds on paper etc like you said, there are enough to experiment with planting at different times too. Happy planting to you too. Ingrid
