I don't know about all palms, but I had three pygmy dates (Phoenix roebelinii) planted on the north side of my house. I had put them in last March or April and had to move them come September when I realized they would be deep in shadow and open to the cold NW winds. So about 5-6 months in-ground. When it came time to move them I dug a hole about twice the diameter of the plant, so if from center of the palm to the end of the fronds was 8 inches, I dug at 16 inches. After 'slicing' the shovel deep around the entire circumference of the palm, I went back around and this time I gently levered upward as I went. As I did this, a few times I felt a 'pop' in the handle of the shovel and figured this was roots snapping and it made me cringe a bit. But once I got the entire root ball up out of the soil, the tap roots were there, dangling from the bottom. So I guess the popping was the ground releasing the roots. I probably could have then transfered the entire root ball to the new location for the palms, but instead I sat each palm (which was actually a cluster of three palms, so nine palms total) in their own 5 gallon bucket with rainwater to loosen the soil and clean the roots. They sat like this for about a day. I then pulled them from the buckets and removed as much of the soil as possible from the roots, effectively bare-rooting them, though I expect a professional would say there was way too much soil left on the roots to be truly bare-rooted. I pretty much used a bag of MG Palm, Cactus and Citrus soil per clump of palms in their new locations and watered well with rainwater of the next couple of months. As of today, all three clumps of palms are looking good, though a little frost-nipped.

Cabbage Palm Tree? You mean Cabbage TREE? The use of the word palm for the cordylines is a misnomer. They are not palms at all. In fact, they are pretty confusing taxonomically confusing. Some places you will find them placed in the Agavaceae family, and others you will find them places in the Dracaenaceae family, and even further sometimes you will find them place in an 'expanded' family called Asparagaceae. Ive always mostly seen it placed in the Agavaceae family myself. So its definately NOT a palm. I thought this was about Cabbage Palmettos! LOL! Anyway, I actually LOVE these plants, and they are commonly sold as Dracena "Spikes" here in the states. I have seen many specimens well over 3' tall and with a trunk here, espeically if they are kept in doors or sheltered through winter from hard freezes. A quick google search turned up a few things. "Propagation Seed - pre-soak for about 10 minutes in warm water and sow in late winter to early spring in a warm greenhouse[78, 164]. The seed usually germinates in 1 - 3 months at 25°c[164]. There is usually a good percentage germination[78]. Prick out the seedlings into individual pots as soon as they are large enough to handle and grow them on in the greenhouse for at least their first winter. Plant out in late spring after the last expected frosts and give the plants some protection in their first winter outdoors[K]. Stem cuttings - cut off the main stem just below the head and then saw off 5cm thick blocks of stem and place them 3cm deep in pure peat in a heated frame. Keep them moist until they are rooting well, then pot them up into individual pots. Plant out in late spring after the last expected frosts. Suckers. These are best removed in early spring and planted out in situ. Protect the division from wind and cold weather and do not allow the soil to become dry until the plant is established. Divisions can also be potted up and grown on until established, planting them out in the summer." Cabbage palm is very cold hardy but I don't think it is cold hardy enough fro zone 7. The seed germination is pretty slow so you are better off buying small cabbage palm and growing it indoors. Here is a link that might be useful: Cabbage Palm Tree

wait. It's a slow grower and slow responder. Sonny of Timberlake Nursery in Livingston TX told me transplanted Sabal palmettos can sulk for up to a year. Northstar Mall in San Antonio planted several dozen over 18 months ago that were 20+ feet tall, and they still don't have full crowns, although nearly all have survived and many of them are flowering.
