Hi Lyn, welcome to the forum. Glad you found it helpful. You seem to be ahead of me with the planting, etc. So don't worry if your seedlings are not as big as Oz's or so. Mine are very small, too. But they'll grow quickly as soon as they are in the ground. I'll wait till next week, maybe, to avoid any late frost. But it's tempting to put them in the ground now as the weather is sooooo nice. So I might plant some this week.

Of course, you are welcome to some 'fancy' seeds. Just watch this forum. We are bound to brag about our favourites at the end of the season and offer seeds.

Hi Lyn and welcome. My plants are so advanced because of my greenhouse. I have only just planted some outside in the last two weeks. I also have some that have just emerged in the last couple of days. Between us here we should be able to supply you with all the seeds you need.

Mine are about 1 centimetre tall at present and still waiting for the others to come up.
Like Canada, Australia has a lot of weather variables.
And you might have to start misspelling some words.
Most of us can barely use cutlery!!!!, let alone knock out a decent sentence.

Hi Lyn. My tommies are going into the ground to-morrow. Planted some store-bought caps and leb eggplants today but the tommy planting requires a bit more effort! I have them in jiffy thingos so there shouldn't be any transplanting shock. Ha-ha probably get another cold snap soon in Melbourne. The cricket season has begun which usually heralds horrible weather!

Thanks to all for your warm welcome. Happy to know that I am not to far "off". Mantis, I wouldn't be very hard to conviced I'm really getting into the veggie garden thing. Addicted I think, obsessed, hook line and sinker!
Adamus, Canada and Australia are similar in alot of ways. BIG country, few people, lots of space, people have very similar "mentality". Grub...70!!!! now THAT is dedication :) Btw hope your chooks are doing better this morning.
Lomatia, cold snap happens in Melbourne even in February:) I think we'll be ok though I feel very confident it's going to be "beginner's luck".
Something that is still very strange concept for me is the idea of going into my north facing garden in Jan/Feb wearing shorts and singlet to pick veggies. It's suppose to be hibernation time!

Welcome Lyn :-) They're a great bunch of people here and very helpful. Don't feel bad about not having as many tomatoes as some of the tomatophiles around here, LOL, I only have 14 and have 7 different varieties going this year. I took my cue from people's best and worst lists on this forum and all but one of the varieties we're putting in are new to us.

As for planting out, Melbourne Cup Day is the traditional tomato-planting day as that's when you're likely to have passed the last frost. After the last few weeks and the cold snaps we've been having, our tommies are enjoying the life of riley in small pots sunning it on the patio getting the reflected warmth and light from the northern wall of the house. I'm not taking any chances, LOL, so we're going for Peter Cundall's treat-em-mean-and-keep-em-keen approach to force them into flower prior to planting out in the ground. We'll see how that goes, but so far they are very healthy (pics in the baby pics thread).

We also have some eggplant started - a bit early but they'll stay in pots to keep warm for a while yet and we are about to start our cucumbers, capsicum and chilli. Corn is also about to be started in the other end of the bed with our potatoes.

Thinking of trying the climbing beans on the corn trick. Apparently they're great companions.

Umm what else are we planting this year... butternut pumpkin, and scads of basil which I've just started so they're ready to transplant around the tomatoes. Lots of herbs, and garlic which is going great guns thanks to advice from someone here to give it a regular liquid feed.
I've learned heaps form others here, so post away, and this year I have some lovely baby toms courtesy of another member who sent me seeds when I couldn't source them :-)
